March 28, 2025-Emporia State softball rolled to a double header sweep of Neb.-Kearney on Friday at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets won game one 9-1 in six innings before taking a 6-0 win the night cap.
Game One
The Hornets used a six run third inning to take control in a 9-1 win over the Lopers in the matinee.
Neb.-Kearney scored first when Mary Chvatal scored on an RBI ground out from Alyssa Fortik in the top of the first. Emporai State answered with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. Trayn Burkhardt led off with an infield single and stole second. She went to third on an error by the Loper third baseman that allowed
Sydney Wagner to reach base. After a steal by Wagner put runners at second and third,
Juliana De Luna reached as Burkhardt was thrown out trying to score on a ground ball to second. De Luna swiped the Hornets third base of the inning to put runners at second and third. A wild pitch scored Wagner to tie the score at 1-1 and De Luna came home on another wild pitch to give Emporia State the lead for good.
The Hornets put the game away with six runs on four hits in the third inning to go up 8-1. With one out Wagner doubled in Burkhardt to start the scoring. Avery Miller then delivered a two run double to make it 5-1.
Mallory Moore followed that with single to plate Miller before
Brooke Flewelling launched a homer to left field to make it 8-1.
With one out in the sixth
Haley Garnett walked, before Burkhardt and Wagner each reached on infield singles to load the bases. De Luna ended the game with a single to center to plate Garnett for the final score of 9-1.
Taryn Burkhardt,
Sydney Wagner and
Juliana De Luna each scored two runs while
Ally Miller and
Brooke Flewelling each had two RBI to lead the Hornet offense. Emporia State would steal five bases in the game.
Gracie Rabe went the first 4.0 innings allowing one run on one hit to pick up the win.
Jayda VanAckeren worked the final two innings and did not give up a run.
Game Two
The Hornets scored three runs without swinging the bat and three runs on one swing in a 6-0 win over the Lopers in game two.
With one out in the second
Brooke Flewelling walked and went to second on a single by
Leslie Ramos.
Kinsey Perine laid down a sac bunt and reached to load the bases when the ball popped out of the first baseman mitt. A wild pitch scored Flewelling and moved everyone up a base. With two outs Burkhardt walked on a ball four wild pitch that allowed Ramos to score and Perine followed her in on a throwing error by the catcher trying to get the ball back to the pitcher.
Flewelling hit her second of the homer of the day in the bottom of the third to score
Mallory Moore and Avery Miller and make it 6-0.
That was more than enough for
Jordan Harrison who scattered five hits with seven strikeouts for the complete game shut out.
Emporia State is back in action on Saturday when they play host to Fort Hays State. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The Hornets 1980 AIAW National Championship team will be recognized as part of Alumni Day activities prior to the first pitch.
