Hornet Baseball Clinches Series Win over Jets With 8-0 Shutout

Emporia State scores six in the first; Seth Stover tosses 7.0 shutout innings

March 22, 2025 – Emporia State baseball clinched their second consecutive MIAA series win on Saturday afternoon, grounding the Newman Jets with an 8-0 shutout win in game two.
 
Seth Stover got the start for Emporia State on Saturday and quickly retired the Jets in order in the top of the first. In the bottom half, the Hornets used three hits, two errors, two hit batters, and a walk to push across six runs and build a sizable advantage through one inning. Noah Steele, Cooper Schwindt, Sammy Padilla, and Logan Myers all recorded an RBI in the inning.
 
Stover continued to control the game on the mound, allowing just one hit over the next two innings, before the Hornets added a run to their total in the bottom of the third. Padilla drew a one-out walk and after advancing to second, stole third and came in to score on a throwing error to make the score 7-0.
 
Newman was retired in order in each of the next three innings by Stover, before Emporia State grabbed their final run of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth. Elijah Reeves reached on a one-out single, and after stealing both second and third base, scored on a sac fly from Logan Myers to make the score 8-0.
 
In the seventh, Newman presented the biggest threat to Stover with a pair of one-out singles, but the sophomore worked out of the inning without allowing a run to cap off his afternoon.
 
Coby Rogers took over for Stover in the final two innings and allowed just one walk and no hits while striking out four to seal the 8-0 win for the Hornets.
 
The Hornets tallied just six hits with Logan Myers going 2-3 and driving in two runs. For Myers, Saturday was his seventh multi-hit game of the season.
 
On the mound, Seth Stover picked up his second win of the season, tossing seven shutout innings and striking out five batters. Coby Rogers matched his career-high with four strikeouts in 2.0 scoreless relief innings.
 
With the win, Emporia State moved to 13-10 on the season and 6-6 in the MIAA, and clinched the series win over the Jets. The Hornets have won consecutive MIAA series' for the first time since the 2021 season.
 
The series finale between the Hornets and Newman is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 23 from the Trusler Sports Complex.
