February 28, 2025-The Emporia State tennis teams split a pair of duals with Metro State-Denver on Friday in Lubbock, Texas. The Hornet men won 4-3 while the Emporia State women fell 4-3.
ESU Men 4, MSU-Denver 3
The Emporia State men came from behind to post a 4-2 win over MSU-Denver at the Penny Gullo Tennis Center. The duo of
Alexis Mattenberger and
Gwendal Mazuay started the dual with a 6-1 win at #2 doubles followed by a 6-4 win at #1 by
Anton Sarunic and
Luke West to earn the opening point.
The Roadrunners took the lead after the first two singles matches as Marco Jalalian won 6-3, 6-4 over
Hachem Fahem at #3 and
Diego Calvo fell 7-5, 7-5 at #4 to Alessandro Munoz.
Mostafa Elbasnaly evened the dual with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at #2 singles. Sarunic put the Hornets back in front with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Lluc Limongi at #1 singles. Mattenberger then came on the court and clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at #6 singles.
Duvan Santiago Torres took the first set 7-6 (8-6) and was trailing 1-0 in the second when the match was abandoned.
MSU-Denver Women 4, ESU 3
The Hornet women fell 4-3 in a tightly contested match at the Penny Gullo Tennis Center. The Roadrunners won #1 doubles before
Perla Conde Vendrell evened things with a 6-4 win at #2.
Yuliya Klimova and
Anastasia Pesic secured the first point for Emporia State with a 7-6 (8-6) win at #3 doubles.
MSU-Denver tied the dual at 1-1 to start singles play when Hanna Haber won 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 over
Giovanna Ferreira at #1. Kambra Roles won 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) over
Lilie Bizouerne at #4 and Klimova lost in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 at #2 to Kim Heddes to put the Roadrunners ahead 3-1. MSU-Denver clinched the dual when Victoria Ricaurte used to tiebreakers to defeat Conde Vendrell 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) at #3 singles.
Paige Stranghoner rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at #6 while Pesic ended the dual with a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) win at #5 singles.
Both teams are scheduled to be back in action on Saturday when they take on host Lubbock Christian. First serve from the Penny Gullo Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas is set for 1:00 p.m.
