Second Half Surge Not Enough for Hornet Men Against Griffons

Emporia State opens second half on 25-8 scoring run; fall 84-74 against Missouri Western

December 6, 2025 – The Emporia State men put together a blistering scoring run to begin the second half, which gave the Hornets a brief 56-51 lead
 
Emporia State got off to a slow start against the visiting Griffons, with Missouri Western outscoring the Hornets 9-2 over the first four minutes of the game. The Hornets trimmed the deficit to five points heading into the first media timeout, but the Griffon lead continued to grow throughout the first half.
 
The largest lead for the visitors came with just over five minutes remaining in the first half, as Missouri Western's advantage swelled to 37-18 over the Hornets.
 
Emporia State attempted to close the gap over the final five of the first half, outscoring Missouri Western 13-6, as the score entering the break was 43-31 in favor of the Griffons.
 
Following the break, Emporia State closed the gap to just two points heading into the first media timeout, beginning the second half on a 12-2 scoring run that was capped off by an Andrew Pengel corner three.
 
After the two teams traded baskets and Missouri Western's lead rested at 49-46 with 13:35 remaining, the Hornets found another run, scoring ten of the next 12, including a Jack Weigus three to force a timeout by the Griffons with Emporia State leading 56-51.
A Griffon response saw the visitors retake the lead 59-58 and after a layup by Pengel to take a 60-59 advantage, Missouri Western regained control with a 70-64 lead with just over five minutes remaining. Emporia State would put together a short 6-1 scoring run, and after a pair of Chris Harris free throws, the Hornets closed the gap to 71-70.
 
Missouri Western was able to close the game on a 13-4 run as Emporia State fell 84-74 on Saturday afternoon.
 
A LOOK AT THE STATS
Emporia State shot 48.2% from the floor and held the Griffons to just 38.6%, but the Griffons held a sizable advantage from the free throw line, going 31-40 compared to just 13-14 by the Hornets.
 
Treyvon Taylor was the leading scorer for the Hornets with 16 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Chris Harris joined Taylor in double figures with 11 points.

Emporia State will be back in action after a nine-day break with a home game against Kansas Christian College on Monday, January 15. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. from White Auditorium.
