THIRD TIME IS THE CHARM
Emporia State will take on Central Oklahoma in the MIAA Quarterfinals for the second consecutive season, after making the MIAA Tournament for the third time in three years under Ken Murczek.
LAST MATCH VS. THE BRONCHOS
The Hornets and Bronchos met in the penultimate match of the regular season, with Emporia State taking the first two sets before Central Oklahoma rallied to win in five.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hornets ended the regular season with a pair of matches at home in White Auditorium, the first of the two was the last meeting with Central Oklahoma, followed by Arkansas-Fort Smith in the regular season finale. After falling in a tough, five-set match to the Bronchos, Emporia State bounced back with a three-set sweep over the Lions, which featured a dominant 25-12 win in the third frame. Over the two matches, Nyia Anderson and Lavra Krizanic led the Hornets in attack with 31 and 29 kills respectively. Against the Lions, Brailee Bogle and Delainee Dexter combined for 45 assists, tied for the most in sweep this season.
ROUND 2 IN ST. JOSEPH
Emporia State volleyball travels to Civic Arena in St. Joseph, Mo. where they meet up with Central Oklahoma in the quarterfinals, one week after the Hornets and Bronchos met in their only regular season matchup.
ABOUT THE COACHES
Ken Murczek is in his third season at Emporia State and has a 51-32 record in his first three seasons. Prior to Murczek's arrival in 2023, the Hornets last made a trip to the MIAA Tournament in 2018, and have made the trip in each of the first two seasons in his tenure.
Edgar Miraku is 328-97 in his 14th year with the Bronchos. He has led UCO to the NCAA Tournament three times, including to the National Quarterfinals last season.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 21-6 on the season, which matches the most wins in a season by the Hornets since going 21-10 in 2011. They went 12-4 in the MIAA, which earned them the five seed in a difficult conference where the top five teams were separated by just one one game. Nyia Anderson has led the Hornet hitters throughout the season and has 303 kills with a career-best 3.16 kills per set average. Mia Frisbie and Brooklynn Weaver both have 101 total blocks this season, which has them tied for sixth in the MIAA. Boglarka Rady has 4.47 digs per set, which is fifth in the MIAA this season. Nyia Anderson was named First Team All-MIAA, while Lavra Krizanic and Boglarka Rady both earned Second Team honors, including Krizanic who was named the MIAA Freshman of the Year.Â
SCOUTING THE BRONCHOS
Central Oklahoma is 26-4 this season, and went 12-4 during MIAA action to earn the fourth-seed in the MIAA Tournament. The Bronchos are also ranked #8 in the latest AVCA poll. Six players for Central Oklahoma earned All-MIAA recognition with Sydney Huck and Kaitlyn Parrot being focal points. Huck was named the MIAA Hitter of the Year after posting an MIAA-leading 3.81 kills per set average while hitting .258. Parrott averaged 5.78 digs per set during the regular season, which leads the conference and ranks fifth in the nation to earn Libero of the Year honors. Setter Lindsey Houran and middle blocker Mikiah Perdue also joined Huck and Parrott on First Team.
FIRST IN 14 YEARS
Emporia State is ranked #24 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, the third ranking in the last five weeks for the Hornets. It is the first time since the 2011 season that the Hornets are ranked. With the Hornets and Bronchos both ranked, Thursday's MIAA Quarterfinal match will mark the tenth ranked match for Emporia State this season.
