Hornet Men Handle Huskies 77-61 on Saturday Afternoon

Emporia State took down St. Cloud State on day two of Hillyard Tipoff Classic

November 15, 2025 – The Emporia State men bounced back on day two of the Hillyard Tipoff Classic on Saturday afternoon, as the Hornets took down St. Cloud State 77-61.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets and Huskies traded baskets over the first six minutes, as the score was tied 10-10 at the 14:19 mark of the first half. Emporia State scored the next ten points in just two minutes with the Hornets now leading 20-10 by the 12:27 mark. The Hornets largest lead of the first half first showed up at the 3:55 mark on a layup by Olafur Styrmisson to put the Hornets ahead 34-18.
 
At the break, the lead was 37-21 in favor of the Hornets, as they limited St. Cloud State to just 7-28 from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
 
Following the halftime break, Emporia State improved their advantage, as a Trey Redd layup at the 17:10 mark put the Hornets ahead 46-25, their largest lead of the game. Over the next ten minutes, the Huskies outscored the Hornets by 15, as a jumper with 7:24 remaining cut the Emporia State lead to 56-50. The lead continued to shrink, as the Huskies cut the deficit to two points with just over four minutes left.
 
In the final four minutes, Emporia State answered the challenge, outscoring St. Cloud State 17-3 to seal a 77-61 win for their first of the season.
 
A LOOK AT THE STATS
Emporia State was 27-63 from the floor, just under 43% shooting, while holding the Huskies to just 20-63 and 6-33 from beyond the arc. Emporia State outscored St. Cloud State 12-6 in points off turnovers and 16-6 in second chance points.
 
Dallas Bear and Andrew Pengel led the way for the Hornets, as both scored 19 points, and combined to make nine threes. Chris Harris put up a double-double, the second of his career, with ten points and ten rebounds. The ten boards match his career high.
 
UP NEXT
The home opener is next for the Hornet men, as they are set to host William Jewell on Wednesday, November 19. Tipoff between the Hornets and Cardinals is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from White Auditorium.
