November 14, 2025-The Lady Hornets got out to a solid start but could not maintain it in a 55-39 season opening loss to Wayne State (Neb.) on Friday in St. Joseph, Mo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Elizabeth Tjaden got Emporia State on the board with a three-pointer at the 8:51 mark of the first quarter and the Lady Hornets led 12-6 after one period. It would be the only three-pointer of the night for ESU. A
Vanessa Coleman layup gave the Lady Hornets their biggest lead of the game at 17-11 with 7:51 left in the second quarter.Â
The Wildcats used a 20-2 run to take a 31-19 lead with 1:58 left in the half. The deficit would stay between nine and 12 points until Wayne State opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 51-32 with 7:35 left.

A LOOK AT THE STATS
Kaitlyn Sanders scored 18 points in her Lady Hornet debut. Emporia State played a total of 14 players in the game but got scoring from just seven players and no one other than Sanders scored more than five points. Emporia State was outrebounded 56-37 as Wayne State grabbed 24 offensive rebounds.
