January 4, 2025-In a game that saw seven ties, ten lead changes and each team post a run of at least 12-0, Washburn was able to come out on top of a 64-61 win over the Lady Hornets in the Turnpike Tussle in White Auditorium.

After the Ichabods scored the first points, Emporia State went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead just three minutes into the first quarter. The Ichabods used a 14-4 run to take their first lead at 16-14 with 50 seconds left in the period.Â
Katie Horyna scored with 17 seconds left to pull the Lady Hornets into a 16-16 tie headed into the second quarter.

Both teams struggled to score in the second period as they combined to go just five of 29 (17.2%) from the field in the quarter. Emporia State scored the final four points of the period to go the locker room up 28-25.

The Lady Hornets scored the first eight points of the third quarter to extend their run to 12-0 as they took a 36-25 lead on a free throw from
Makenzie McDaniel with 7:32 left. After an
Elizabeth Tjaden three-pointer at the 5:02 mark gave Emporia State a 39-28 lead, the Ichabods went on a 13-0 run of their own to go up 41-39 with 2:18 left in the quarter. Horyna scored at the buzzer for the Lady Hornets to send the game to the fourth quarter knotted at 41.

Janiyah Alvarez and McDaniel each scored inside to give Emporia State a 45-41 lead one minute into the fourth quarter. Washburn used a 9-0 run to retake the lead at 50-45 with 5:35 left in the game. McDaniel scored inside off an assist from
Jayla Cornelius to get the Lady Hornets within one at 53-52 with 1:34 remaining. The Ichabods hit eight of 12 free throws the rest of the way to hold on for the 64-61 win.

Makenzie McDaniel led Emporia State with a game high 16 points while
Katie Horyna had her second double-double with 13 points and a career high 11 rebounds. They were joined in double figures by
Jayla Cornelius who scored 11 points with nine coming in the fourth quarter.Â
