January 15, 2025 – The Lady Hornets trailed for just over 37 minutes on Wednesday night in their road matchup against Washburn, as Emporia State fell to the Ichabods 88-73 in Topeka.
Emporia State struggled out of the gates offensively, as
Gracie Gilpin was the lone Lady Hornet with a field goal in the first period. Washburn jumped ahead 4-0 before two free throws and a three from Gilpin put Emporia State ahead 5-4, their first lead of the game.
After an Ichabod free throw to tie the game, Gilpin converted a floater to make the score 7-5. Washburn outscored Emporia State 18-9 over the final six minutes of the first, as they held a 23-16 advantage.
Gracie Gilpin scored 12 of the 16 Lady Hornet points, and all four field goals as Emporia State shot just 4-21 in the period.
In the second, Washburn increased their lead to eleven, holding a 32-21 lead with 5:36 left in the first half before the offense for Emporia State picked up. The Lady Hornets rallied over the next three minutes, outscoring the Ichabods 12-2 to trim the deficit to 34-33 with 2:13 left before halftime. The Hornets were unable to continue their run to close out the half, as Washburn scored the final seven points of the half, taking a 41-33 lead into the break.
The Lady Hornets shot just 9-31 from the floor in the first half but managed to shoot 5-14 from three. Washburn outrebounded Emporia State in the first half 24-17.
Following the break, the Lady Hornets and Ichabods traded baskets in the opening minutes before the Washburn lead eventually grew to 12 with the Lady Hornets trailing 52-40 at the 6:16 mark of the third quarter. Emporia State worked to close the deficit to seven with just under five minutes left in the third, but the Ichabod once again increased their lead, as they took a 68-55 lead over Emporia State heading into the fourth.
In the final period, Washburn continued to build on their lead, as Emporia State fell behind 78-58 with just over six minutes remaining, the largest lead of the game for the Ichabods. Emporia State put together a late run in the final two minutes, but eventually fell 88-73 against Washburn on Wednesday night.
Gracie Gilpin was one of three Lady Hornets in double figures, leading the way with 18 points on 6-12 shooting and 4-8 from three.
Katie Horyna and
Macey Gandee each had ten points of their own.
Janiyah Alvarez led the Lady Hornets with seven rebounds.
Emporia State will be back in action on Saturday, January 18 as they travel to Warrensburg, Mo. to take on Central Missouri. Tip-off between the Lady Hornets and Jennies is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
