Successful Saturday for Emporia State Tennis

September 7, 2024-It was a successful Saturday for the Emporia State men's and women's tennis programs as they combined to go 27-7 on the day in two different cities.
 
The Hornet men won 19 of 22 matches on Saturday at the George Milton Chicken Dinner Invitational at the Kossover Family Tennis Center.  Emporia State will have seven players in singles flight championship matches with Hornets pitted against each other Flight 1 and Flight 4. Anton Sarunic and Santiago Torres will meet for the title in Flight 1 while Gwendal Mazquay and Alexis Mattenberger will play for the Flight 4 championship.  Mostafa Elbasnaly will play for the Flight 2 title, Diego Calvo will play in the Flight 5 final and Harris Kossover go for the Flight 6 championship. The Hornets won four of five doubles matches.
 
The Emporia State women went 8-4 on the day to finish the Rumble by the River with and 18-15 overall record. Giovanna Ferriera, Kiera Knoflicek, Anastasia Pesic and Paige Stranghoner all went undefeated on Saturday in Tahlequah.  Ferriera and Knoflicek won two doubles matches and each won their singles match. Pesic teamed with Sheriden Wichman to win in doubles and picked up a singles win by injury default as well.  Stranghoner did not lose a game in a straight sets singles win.
 
Pesic and Stranghoner finished the weekend undefeated.  Stranghoner added a doubles win and two singles wins while Pesic won a singles and doubles match on Friday.
 
The Emporia State men are back in action with day two of the George Milton Chicken Dinner Invitational starting with the singles championship matches at 10:00 a.m. at the Kossover Family Tennis Center.
