Hornet men advance to finals in two draws of ITA Regional

September 27, 2024-The Emporia State men's tennis team came away with ten wins on Friday at the ITA Men's Regional in Topeka. Gwendal Mazuay will play in the consolation final of the B Draw while Santiago Torres and Alexis Mattenberger made it to the B Draw consolation final on Sunday. All in all the Hornets went 11-6 on Saturday,
 
Anton Sarunic won his match in the round of 16 over Jip Mens of Neb.-Kearney 6-2, 6-1 before retiring in the quarter finals with an injury.  The Hornets could have made it three finals as 
Torres and Diego Calvo each advanced with two wins to reach the consolation semifinals when they abandoned the match since they were playing each other. 
 
Meanwhile Mazuay and Luke West each picked up wins in the Consolation quarterfinals before Mazuay took a 7-6 (7-3, 7-6 (8-6) victory in the semifinals.  He will play in the consolation championship at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday against Rodrigo Hoppe of Ark.-Fort Smith.
 
Torres and Mattenberger won their found of 16 and quarterfinal in the consolation bracket of the main draw before advancing to the finals when their opponents from Northwest Missouri withdrew for personal circumstances.  The Hornet duo will play for the consolation bracket championship at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
