TURNPIKE TUSSLE
The Emporia State women's tennis team begins a week of duals against nationally ranked opponents when they play host to #9 Washburn in the tennis edition of the Turnpike Tussle. First serve from the Kossover Family Tennis Complex on the ESU campus is set for 2:00 p.m.

LAST SETS
Emporia State women evened their MIAA record with a 6-1 win at Fort Hays State on Saturday in Hays, Kan.
The Hornets got in front early thanks to the doubles competition. Â
Perla Conde Vendrell and
Sheriden Wichman won 6-1 at #3 while
Angelina Gnezdilova teamed with
Andrea Santiago to win 6-1 at #1 and clinch the doubles point.
Paige Stranghoner got the singles action started with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #5 while Conde Vendrell won 6-2, 6-3 at #1 to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. Â Santiago clinched the dual win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #6 singles. Lilie Bizourne won 6-0, 6-4 at #3 and Gnezdilova took a 6-1, 6-4 win at #4 singles to close out the scoring for Emporia State.
THE COACH
Former Hornet CeCe Peyroche is 4-6 in her first full season as the permanent coach of the Emporia State women's program. She took over as the interim coach for both teams in December of 2022. She went 6-9 with the men's team and 5-13 in women's action last year. Peyroche was 23-15 in singles play during her three years as a Hornet before moving into the graduate assistant position last year. Â
A LOOK AT THE HORNETS
The Hornet women are 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA this year. They have been strong in the middle of the line up this season with a combined record of 17-13 in #3-5 singles.Â
Lilie Bizouerne is 5-4 on the year with a 3-2 mark at #3 singles while going 2-2 in the #4 spot.
Giovanna Ferreira is 5-5 overall with a 3-1 mark at #3 singles.Â
Anastasia Pesic is 4-2 on the season, going 1-0 at #4 and 3-2 at #5 singles.Â
Sheriden Wichman is 2-2 overall and 2-0 at #5 singles.
Wichman and
Perla Conde have paired to go 6-3 in doubles action, with a 5-3 mark at the #3 spot and winning their lone match at #1 doubles.
Bizouerne and
Paige Stranghoner are 4-5 while Ferreira and
Anastasia Pesic are 1-0 to give Emporia State a 5-5 overall mark at #2 doubles.Â
KNOW THE FOE
The Washburn women are 10-3, 0-1 in the MIAA and ranked #9 in the nation. Maja Jung is ranked #3 in the nation in singles play with a 10-2 record at the #1 spot. She and partner Lara Schmid they are ranked #7 nationally in doubles play with a 7-3 record.
Schmid is ranked #74 in the nation and is 3-6 overall with a 2-1 record at #4 singles.
Peyton Koper is 7-4 overall with a 3-1 record at #4 singles.
Isabella Martensson is 7-3 overall with a 3-0 mark at #6 singles.
SERIES INFO
The Ichabods have won nine of the last 12 meetings in the Turnpike Tussle, including the last eight in a row.
LAST MEETING
The Hornets were swept by the Ichabods 7-0 in Topeka last year.

Andrea Santiago both went to a third set tiebreaker at #5 and #6 singles before falling.Â

Both the Emporia State men and women will take on nationally ranked Northwest Missouri on Friday at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex. Â The women play the #27 Bearcats while the #47 Hornet men will take on the #38 Northwest Missouri men. First serve for both duals is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.Â
