Game Recap: Softball |

Hornet Softball Swept by #3 Rogers State

Emporia State falls 14-4 in game one and 3-2 in extra innings in game two

March 16, 2024-Emporia State softball dropped both ends of a double header with third ranked Rogers State on Saturday afternoon.  The Hornets fell 14-4 in five innings in the matinee before taking a 3-2 loss in eight innings in the night cap.

Game 1
The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the first but the Hillcats would score the next nine runs on the way to a 14-4 RSU win.
Bailey Flewelling singled in Lexi Williams to give Emporia State a 1-0 lead after one inning. They held the lead until the third inning.  After the first two batter grounded out, Rogers State got back to back singles before Callie Yellin delivered a single through the left side to tie the game at 1-1.  With two outs and two strikes on her Bridgett Morales lifted a fly ball to the wall in left field that Lexi Williams could not hold on to, allowing two runs to score.
A three run homer by Lana Gass and a two run triple from Yellin made it 8-1 in the fourth.  With the bases loaded Jordan Harrison relieved Hipsher in the circle. She got Kaylee Lyon to fly out to right and Emma Furnish appeared to throw out Yellin trying to score but it was ruled that Flewelling blocked the plate. That resulted in another run instead of an inning ending double play as the Hillcats took a 9-1 lead. The Hornets responded in the bottom of the fourth with a two run single from McKensy Glass that scored Bailey Flewelling and Alexis DialAbbey Ward followed with a single to make it 9-4 headed to the fifth inning.
Abbey Rogers got an RBI double and Yellin hit an RBI single to make it 11-4 before Morales hit a three run homer to center field to make it 14-4.
Bailey Flewelling was two for three with a run scored and an RBI while McKensy Glass went one for two with two RBI. Rabe gave up six runs, five of them earned in 3.0 innings with two strikeouts in the loss.

Game 2
All of the runs in the nightcap came via solo home runs as Emporia State took Rogers State to extra innings in a 3-2 loss.
Emma Furnish started things with a led off homer in the bottom of the first and Brooke Flewelling had a lead off homer in the bottom of the second to give Emporia State a 2-0 lead.  Jayda VanAckeren made that hold up until the fifth inning for the Hornets.  Kaylee Lyon led off with a homer to left and with one out Lana Gass tied things with a home run of her own to make it 2-2.  Gracie Rabe then relieved VanAckeren and got out of the inning.
Lexi Williams singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh and went to second on a ground out but was stranded there. In the top of the eighth Morales hit a home run to left center to give the Hillcats a 3-2 lead. Josie Harrison reached on a fielding error by the second baseman in the bottom of the eight to put the tying run on base but the Hornets could not get her around to score.
Emma Furnish went two for four with a home run for one RBI and a run scored while Brooke Flewelling had a solo home run. Rabe pitched the final 3.2 innings and allowed just one run on four hits with two strikeouts in the loss.

Emporia State is back in action on Friday, March 22 when they travel to Jefferson City, Mo. to take on Lincoln.  First pitch for the final MIAA road trip against Blue Tigers is set for 2:00 p.m.
