February 18, 2024-Emporia State showed off power, speed and pitching in posting a pair of shut out wins on Sunday at the ESU Classic. The Hornets run-ruled UMary 9-0 in five innings and followed that with a 7-0 sin over Wayne State.
ESU 9, UMary 0 (5 innings)
In the first game of the day against UMary
Alexis Dial got things started offensively for the Hornets with a two out homer to left in the first inning before Emporia State erupted for five runs in the second inning of the 9-0 win. The Hornets had six hits in the second including two doubles and a triple on the way to their five runs. Dial delivered the big blow with a two run triple to make it 5-0 before scoring on a
Bailey Flewelling single. Emporia State went up 9-0 thanks to four hit and an error in the bottom of the fourth.
Alexis Dial was two for three with a home run, a triple, three RBI, and two runs scored.

Lexi Williams was two for three with two runs and an RBI. After giving up hits to two of the first three batters she faced
Josie Harrison recorded 14 straight outs as she tossed a two hit shutout.
ESU 7, Wayne State 0
In the nightcap Jayda Van Ackeren ran the Hornets shutout string to 14.1 innings with a three-hitter in a 7-0 win over Wayne State. After giving up a lead off single, VanAckeren got double play and a ground out to start of string of retiring nine straight Wildcats.
Lexi Williams singled and stole second with one out in the bottom of the first before
Alexis Dial drove her home with a single to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Williams made it 3-0 with an RBI double in the second before Dial drove her in again with another single. Emporia State went up 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth without hitting the ball out of the infield.
McKensy Glass walked and went to second when
Emma Furnish reached on an error at third on a sac bunt attempt. After a wild pitch
Abbey Ward got an RBI ground out to make it 5-0. Williams beat out a bunt single to drive in Furnish to give the Hornets a 6-0 lead.
Avery Brewer made it 7-0 with an RBI double in the fifth.
Lexi Williams went three for four with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored while
Alexis Dial was three for four with two RBI.
Jayda VanAckeren went the distance in the circle, giving up just three hits and two walks in 7.0 innings.
Emporia State is back in action on Monday morning as they take on UMary at 10:30 a.m. followed by Sioux Falls at 12:45 p.m. on Turnbull Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.

Emporia State has now won six straight games, the longest active winning streak in the MIAA.
