30 point win for Lady Hornets at Newman

Emporia State wins second straight with 76-46 win at Newman

February 17, 2024-The Lady Hornets scored the first 12 points of the game on the way to a 76-46 win at Newman on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets scored just 15 seconds into the game on a Faith Paramore lay-up, then forced turnovers on the next two Jet possessions and converted to go up 6-0 with 8:45 left in the quarter. Paramore capped the 12-0 run with a three-pointer with 6:45 left. Newman finally got on the board with three pointer by Carissa Beck with 6:23 remaining in the quarter.  The Jets would close within 17-9 with 3:31 left before both teams went the next 1:41 without a score.  Queen Ulabo had an old fashioned three point play with 1:50 remaining to start a period ending 7-0 run to take a 24-9 lead into the second.

Ulabo hit a three to open the second quarter to give the Lady Hornets a 27-9 lead the margin would not drop below 16 the rest of the game. Emporia State ended the half on a 6-1 run to take a 41-20 lead to the break.

The Lady Hornets opened the third with an 8-2 run to go up 49-22 with 6:05 left in the third quarter. Newman outscored ESU 11-7 the rest of the period and the Lady Hornets led 56-33 going to the fourth quarter. Emporia State would take their largest lead at 76-44 with 15 seconds left before settling for the 30 point win.
 
Paramore led Emporia State with 20 points and ten rebounds while Ulabo added 15 points.  Katie Horyna scored 11 points and four assists in her first action since January 25.
 
With the win Emporia State's magic number for clinching a spot in the MIAA Tournament is down to one. They will have their first chance to clinch on Wednesday, February 21 against Central Missouri.  Tip-off in White Auditorium is set for 5:30 p.m.  Wednesday will be Hoops for Hope Night at White Auditorium.
