Emporia State men win 4-0, women fall 4-3 against Maryville on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 February 10, 2024-The Emporia State men opened the spring portion of the tennis dual schedule with a 4-0 sweep of Maryville while the Hornet women fell 4-3 to the Saints on Saturday in Springfield, Mo.
 
Playing to clinch the Emporia State men picked up a pair of 6-1 wins in #1 and #2 doubles so secure the first point.  Anton Sarunic won 6-1, 6-1 at #1 singles and Sergio Vera Martin picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win at #2 to give ESU a 3-0 lead.  Mostafa Elbasnaly then clinched the dual with a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) win at #3 singles.
 
The Emporia State women went the distance in their dual with Maryville.  After falling 6-1 at #1 doubles, the Hornets came back to get wins at #2 and #3 to claim the doubles point. Giovanna Ferreira won 6-3, 6-4 at #3 singles and Anastasia Pesic had a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) win at #4 singles however the Saints took wins at #1, #2, #5 and #6 singles, with the matches at #2 and #5 going to a third set tiebreaker, to win the dual 4-3.
 
Both the men and women will be back in action on Sunday when they take on Drury at the Cooper Tennis Center in Springfield.
