November 27, 2024-Missouri S&T hit a school record 17 three-pointers as they defeated Emporia State 85-67 on Wednesday afternoon in Rolla, Mo.
Katie Horyna had her first career double-double with 25 points and ten rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
The Miners hit their first three from beyond the arc to take a 9-2 lead with 7:24 left in the first quarter. They would take a 16-4 lead with 5:42 left in the quarter on Franchesca Metz's third three-pointer of the period. The Lady Hornets would close the quarter on an 8-3 run capped by an old fashioned three-point play by Horyna to trail 19-12 after the first.
The second quarter started much like the first as the Miners first 12 points of the period came on three-pointers. S&T led 31-16 with 5:25 left when Emporia State went on a 9-2 run to get back within 33-25 on a pair of
Elizabeth Tjaden free throws with 1:55 remaining. The Miners scored the final five points to take a 38-25 lead to the locker room.
Missouri S&T hit ten of 16 three-pointers while Emporia State only connected on one of ten in the first 20 minutes.
The Lady Hornets scored five of the first seven points of the second half on a free throw from Tjaden and a put back by
Makenzie McDaniel to cut the deficit to ten points. The teams traded baskets before the Miners scored seven straight to go up 47-30 with 6:41 left in the period. A 12-0 run gave Missouri S&T a 62-36 lead 17 seconds left in the quarter before Horyna ended the period with two free throws with 5.2 seconds left to make it 62-38 headed into the fourth.
Emporia State scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter for a 10-0 run to make it 62-46 with 8:50 remaining. That would be as close as they would get as the teams played even the rest of the way.
Katie Horyna led Emporia State with her first career double-double of 25 points and a career high ten rebounds to go with five assists.
Gracie Gilpin was one shy of her career high with 22 points as they were the only Lady Hornets in double figures.
Emporia State will be off for the Thanksgiving weekend before returning to action against #15 on December 5. Tip-off from White Auditorium is set for 5:30 p.m.
