November 19, 2024 - The Lady Hornets hosted the Newman Jets on Tuesday night from White Auditorium as offensive struggled plagued Emporia State, as they shot under 28% from the floor and never led in the game, ultimately falling 74-59 in the non conference matchup.
Emporia State got off to a slow start, as the Lady Hornets trailed 15-6 with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter. A three from
Jayla Cornelius and a putback from
Janiyah Alvarez cut the Newman lead to 15-11 heading into the second.
In the second, the struggles continued for the Lady Hornets, shooting just 3-18 in the quarter, including 0-9 from inside the arc. Emporia State entered the halftime break trailing the Jets 36-22. Emporia State went just 8-39 in the first half, and just 2-8 from the free throw line, while Newman shot nearly 40% from the floor.
Following the break, the offense picked up for the Lady Hornets as they shot nearly 50% from the floor and 4-5 from the free throw, and they used their improved shooting to trim the Newman lead to 48-43 with just over a minute left in the quarter.
Katie Horyna sparked the scoring run, scoring the final nine Emporia State points of the quarter as the Lady Hornets trailed 52-43 heading to the fourth.
Newman responded in the fourth, opening the quarter on a 20-5 scoring run that lasted over six minutes, as Emporia State trailed 72-48 with 3:45 remaining. Emporia State scored 11 of the final 13 points, but fell to the Jets 74-59 on Tuesday night.
Katie Horyna led the Lady Hornets with 17 points as she was the lone player in double-figures on the night.
Emporia State will return to action on Friday, November 22 as they host East Central from White Auditorium. Tipoff between the Lady Hornets and Tigers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
