October 5, 2024 – Emporia State grounded the Jets as they picked up a sweep of Newman on Saturday night.
In the first set, the Hornets traded early leads with the Jets before capturing a 12-11 lead they did not relinquish for the remainder of the first. Emporia State scored 15 of the final 21 points to clinch the first set 25-17.
Unlike the first set, Emporia State took control from the start as they quickly took a 9-4 lead. The Hornets sustained their momentum on their way to a 25-19 second set win, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Weronika Wrzesinska highlighted the second set, tallying eight kills in the frame.
The Hornets and Jets traded points through much of the third set and Emporia State led 20-17 late in the set following a pair of
Rayishon Jackman kills. Newman responded with a 6-1 scoring run, taking a 23-21 lead. Following a Hornet timeout, two kills from
Camilla Ossola and another from Wrzesinska gave Emporia State a 24-23 lead. After a kill from the Jets to even the set, the Hornets closed out the set 26-24 to clinch the sweep.
Emporia State hit .258 as a team and limited Newman to just .164 at the net. Three Hornets reached double-digit kills with
Weronika Wrzesinska leading the team with 15 of her own.
Rayishon Jackman and
Camilla Ossola had 13 and 12 respectively.
Brailee Bogle had 39 assists and 11 digs.
Willow Deckinger had a team-high 14 digs in the match.
Emporia State begins a five-match road trip on Tuesday, October 8 in the first round of the Turnpike Tussle this season. First serve between the Hornets and the Ichabods in Topeka is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
