One championship and four runners-up for Emporia State Tennis at WU Invitational

October 28, 2024-The women's double team of Paige Stranghoner and Sheriden Wichman won the flight two doubles championship to highlight Emporia State's weekend at the Washburn Invitational Tennis Tournament.
 
Stranghoner and Wichman won all three matches they played in Topeka starting with a 6-4 win over Maddie Shelley and Daphney Koutsofta of Washburn in their closest match of the tournament.  They defeated Missouri Western's Elena Rey and Kyleigha Fenwic 6-1 in the semifinals before dispatching Ichabods Issabella Pensavalle and Jasel Bailey 6-1 in the finals.
 
Two Hornets made the championship match in singles play. Perla Conde Vendrell made the championship match of flight two while Andrea Santiago Sanchez made it in flight four. Conde Vendrell defeated Naghely Garcia of Cowley CC) 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) in the first round then defeated Washburn's Maddie Shelley 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) in the semifinals.  She fell 6-2, 6-0 to Saajida Razick of Washburn in the championship match. Santiago Sanchez opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Missouri Western's Kyleigha Fenwick, then won 6-3, 6-4 over Washburn's Daphney Koutsofta in the semifinals.  She fell 6-4, 6-2 to the Ichabods Issabella Pensavalle in the final match.
 
Gwendal Mazuay highlighted the men's action for Emporia State as he advanced to the championship match in the fourth flight.  He defeated Gabe Whiston of Neb.-Omaha 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, then took out Graham Faris of Washburn 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals before falling 6-2, 6-3 to Washburn's Moritz Pieper in the championship match.
 
Lukje West and Santiago Torres made the championship match in flight two doubles for the men as they defeated Washburn's Matthew Earle and Ivan Ivanov 6-4 in their first match before beating Felipe Leguizamon and Isaac Gonzalez 6-4 of Cowley CC in the semifinals.  They dropped a 6-4 decision to Washburn's Yoshinobu and Graham Faris in the final match.
 
This was the final action of the fall for the Hornets.  They will resume play in the spring with the dual match portion of their season.
