October 26, 2024 - Emporia State rallied to take both set three and four against Washburn on Saturday afternoon from White Auditorium, but the Hornets' comeback came up just short as they fell in five against the Ichabods.
In the first set, the Hornets outhit the Ichabods .175 to .057, but five Washburn service aces and a trio of Hornet errors in serve resulted in Washburn taking set one 25-22. Set two featured multiple lead changes and the Hornets eventually held a late 19-17 lead over the Ichabods, their largest of the set. Washburn responded to the Emporia State lead, rallying to finish the set with an 8-1 scoring run as they built a 2-0 lead in the match.
After allowing the Ichabods to hit nearly .300 in set two, the Hornets responded in set three by limiting Washburn to just .045 hitting. However, the Ichabods led 13-8 midway through the set, just 12 points from completing the sweep. Emporia State responded with a 9-1 scoring run, as they took a 17-14 lead in the set. After the run by Emporia State, Washburn scored six of the next seven to regain a 20-18 advantage. Needing a run to extend the match, the Hornets responded with seven of the last eight points to take set three 25-21.
In set four, the Hornets took control from the jump, scoring the first six points of the set. Following a 5-1 scoring run by the Ichabods, Emporia State responded with another run of their own, eventually extending their lead to 20-12 in the fourth set. Washburn attempted to rally back, but Emporia State held off the visitors with a 25-21 win in set four.
Emporia State was unable to carry their momentum from sets three and four, as they hit just .037 and allowed the Ichabods to hit .385 as Washburn controlled much of the fifth set as they took set five 15-6 over the Hornets.
The Hornets were led in the attack by
Weronika Wrzesinska who had 19 kills while
Camilla Ossola and
Rayishon Jackman each had 14 of their own.
Brailee Bogle and
Sydney Fiatte combined for 57 assists with 29 and 28 respectively. On defense,
Mia Frisbie had two solo blocks and eight assists for a career-high ten total blocks.
Emporia State will continue their home stand on Wednesday, October 30 as they host Northwest Missouri. First serve between the Hornets and Bearcats is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
