Hornet Soccer Unable to Complete Comeback Against Riverhawks

Emporia State fall 2-1 at Northeastern State; Hadlie Lowe scores third goal of the season

October 20, 2024 - Emporia State attempted to mount a second-half comeback against Northeastern State but the Hornets eventually fell short against the Riverhawks 2-1 on Sunday afternoon on the road.

Both teams mounted pressure against the other in the first 17 minutes, with the Hornets and Riverhawks recording three shots and two shots on goal early on. The breakthrough happened for Northeastern State in the 36th minute, taking a 1-0 lead over the Hornets. Mackenzi Goen made two more saves before the halftime break to keep the score at 1-0. 

Emporia State was outshot 11-7 in the first half, as Northeastern State had six in the final 14 minutes. Following the break, the Riverhawks were quickly able to double their lead, scoring in the 47th minute on the first shot of the second half. 

The Hornets' response came in the 62nd minute as Hadlie Lowe scored her third goal of the season. After free kick into the box, the ball fell to Lowe on the right side of the box who slotted her shot past the Riverhawks goalkeeper into the bottom left corner to make the score 2-1. Over the final 28 minutes, the Hornets tallied three shots and four corner kicks but were unable to record a second goal, falling 2-1 on the road against Northeastern State.

Emporia State had the advantage on shots in the second half 5-3 but were outshot 14-12 in the match. The Hornets will be back in action on Friday, October 25 as they travel to take on Nebraska-Kearney. Kickoff between the Hornets and Lopers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
