Flurry of First Half Goals Power Hornet Soccer Past Lions

Emporia State scored four first half goals as they took down Missouri Southern on Sunday

October 13, 2024 - Emporia State scored three goals in the first 17 minutes and added another just before halftime as they went on to beat Missouri Southern 4-2 on Senior Day for the Hornets.

The first chance of the game came from the Hornets in the fourth minute. The Hornets had possession in the midfield and a long through ball from Ava Smith found Megyn Mahloch down the left wing as Mahloch was able to cut in from the left and beat the keeper for the first goal of the game. Missouri Southern was able to generate a pair of shots over the next few minutes before the second goal for Emporia State came in the 13th minute. Mahloch again had possession down the left wing and played a cross into the box that found Hadlie Lowe coming in from the right side who converted the opportunity to double the Hornet lead.

After just four minutes after the Lowe goal, Emporia State converted their third of the match as an Abby Bachman corner kick found Aubree Blackman at the back post to push the lead to 3-0. Over the next 20 minutes, the Hornets had three more shots before adding their fourth goal of the match in the 40th minute. Madeline Bracy converted the opportunity, scoring from outside the box for her first career goal.

In the first half, Emporia State outshot Missouri Southern 10-3 and generated three corner kicks to just one for the Lions. Following the break, the wind began to backup the Lions and aided the Missouri Southern attack. The Lions scored two second half goals but the Hornets held off any attempt to trim the deficit any further as Emporia State grabbed the 4-2 win on Sunday afternoon.

Aubree Blackman and Madeline Bracy scored their first goal of the season and the first of their career. Megyn Mahloch and Hadlie Lowe each scored their second goal of the season while Mahloch's assist to Lowe was the first of her career.

Emporia State will be back in action on Friday, October 18 as they travel to Claremore, OK to take on Rogers State. Kickoff between the Hornets and Hillcats is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
