October 12, 2024 - Emporia State traded sets with Fort Hays State on Saturday, as the Hornets were able to outlast the Tigers in five sets to clinch the 3-2 win.
The Hornets and Tigers traded points through the early portion of the first frame with Fort Hays State leading 15-14 midway through the set. The Hornets responded with five straight points, included three kills from three different players, to propel Emporia State to a 25-22 win in set one.
Emporia State struggled offensively in the second frame, hitting just .086 with nine errors as the Tigers took the second 25-22.
In the third, the Hornet attack regained their footing, as they lead for most of the set. Emporia State recorded only three errors and had 17 kills on .500 hitting to take set three 25-16. The Hornets were unable to close out the match in four sets however, as they hit .057 while allowing .379 hitting from the Tigers. Fort Hays State was able to control much of the fourth, as they won the set 25-17 to force a fifth and final set.
The Hornets took an early advantage in the fifth set, leading 8-4. A rally from the Tigers trimmed the Emporia State lead to 10-9 but an error from Fort Hays State restored a two-point Hornet lead. Following the Tiger error, Emporia State closed out the set with four straight kills by
Camilla Ossola to take the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
Emporia State hit just .211 in the match but limited Fort Hays State to .193 hitting.
Rayishon Jackman had 19 kills to lead the way while
Camilla Ossola and
Weronika Wrzesinska had 18 and 17 kills respectively. Ossola hit .500 in the match and equaled her career-high of 18 kills she set earlier in the week against Washburn.
The Hornets will be back in action next weekend as they take on Central Missouri in Warrensburg on Friday, October 18. First serve between the Hornets and Jennies is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
