January 3, 2024 – The Emporia State Lady Hornets fell to Newman 68-58 on Wednesday night from White Auditorium.
Emporia State struggled in the first half as Newman took an early 20-9 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Hornets scored the final four points as they entered the second quarter trailing the Jets 20-13.
The largest lead for Newman came with 3:52 remaining in the first half as the Jets took a 30-18 advantage over the Lady Hornets. Emporia State and Newman traded baskets over the final four minutes as the Lady Hornets trailed 35-25 entering the halftime break.
In the first half, Emporia State shot 9-33 from the field and 3-13 from three.
Following the halftime break, both teams traded points over the first two minutes as the Jets led 40-30. Over the next four minutes, Emporia State put together a 14-3 scoring run as they took a 44-43 lead with 3:44 remaining in the third quarter. Over the final 3:44 of the quarter, both teams combined for just one field goal as the Lady Hornets and Jets entered the fourth quarter tied 47-47.
Emporia State opened the fourth on a 6-2 scoring run as they led 53-49 with 7:48 remaining. Over the final 7:48 of the game, Newman outscored the Lady Hornets 17-5 as Emporia State fell 68-58.
Gracie Gilpin led the Lady Hornets with 17 points on 4-9 shooting from three and 3-4 from the free throw line.

Stevie Stinchcomb each scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points each.
Emporia State will return to action on Saturday, December 6 as they take on Central Oklahoma. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. from White Auditorium.
