EMPORIA STATE FOOTBALL HAS TWO NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA
Â
January 23, 2024-Emporia State receiver
Tyler Kahmann and punter
Ross Brungardt have both earned Second-Team Academic All-American honors as presented by College Sports Communicators, formerly CoSIDA.
Â
Kahmann has a 3.70 GPA in business. He was named Associated Press (AP), Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA), and Don Hansen Football Second-Team All-American and was on the D2Football.com Elite 100 list. The junior receiver led the nation in touchdown catches with an Emporia State record 20 this season. He was ranked third in the nation in receptions, fourth in receiving yards, and sixth in scoring, points scored and total touchdowns. He had 101 catches for 1,234 yards on the season. He is the only player in the NCAA at any level to have 100 catches, 1,000 receiving yards and 20 touchdown catches this season. His 34 touchdown catches are an Emporia State career record and rank second among active NCAA Division II players.
Â
Brungardt graduated with a 3.72 GPA in marketing and has a 3.67 graduate GPA in business administration. He was a Don Hansen Football Honorable Mention All-American and was the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Year. He earned First-Team All-MIAA honors three times in his career. He led the MIAA and ranked ninth nationally in punting average. He is the ESU career record holder with a 42.1 punting average over 246 career punts.
Â
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist College Sports Communicators with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Division II Academic All-America® program.
Â
Kahmann and Brungardt's Academic All-American honors are the 64th and 65th all-time for Emporia State and brings the number of times a Hornet football player has been honored to 20. This is the eighth straight year Emporia State has had a football player earn Academic All-American honors, the longest active streak in NCAA Division II. They were two of six players from the MIAA to be honored as an Academic All-American this year.
Â
The Hornets went 9-3 last season and won the Fun Town RV Heritage Bowl. Kahmann is one of ten players on offense and seven on defense that started the Heritage Bowl and are slated to return next season. It is the ninth time in school history the Hornets have won at least nine games and the eighth time in the last 11 seasons Emporia State has advanced to the post season.
Â
Kahmann and Brungardt join Emporia State soccer players Hannah Woolery and Mackenzie Dimarco in earning Academic All-America honors this fall. The Hornets had four of the ten Academic All-Americans in the fall, the most of any school in the association.
