September 30, 2023 – Emporia State Volleyball fell in three sets against Missouri Western on Saturday afternoon from White Auditorium.
In the first set, Emporia State and Missouri Western traded points in a tightly contested set which opened with the Hornets holding a 9-6 lead over the Griffons. The Griffons scored the next five points as they took control with an 11-9 advantage over the Hornets. Both teams continued to trade points with the Hornets holding a late lead at 18-17. Missouri Western rallied to score eight of the final nine points to claim the first set 25-19 over Emporia State.
Missouri Western maintained their momentum from the end of the first set as they built an early 5-2 lead over Emporia State. The Hornets struggled to secure a foothold in the set as the Griffons built their largest lead of the match, an 18-7 advantage, on their way to taking the second set 25-14.
The third and final set also began with the Griffons recording five of the first seven points on their way to an early lead. Emporia State put together a rally as they trimmed the Missouri Western lead down to 9-8. The Hornets were unable to tie up the set as the Griffons expanded their lead as they eventually took the third set 25-17 as the Hornets fell 3-0.
Sandora Sasaki posted a match-high 14 kills on .208 hitting.
McKenya Sorrells tallied five kills of her own while also recording four blocks.
Emporia State will return to action on Friday, October 6 as they travel to Edmond, Okla. to take on Central Oklahoma. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
