Emporia State Sweeps William Jewell to Begin 2023 Season With Pair of Wins

Hornets take down Cardinals 3-0; begin Murczek era 2-0

September 1, 2023 – Emporia State Volleyball capped off a 2-0 day one at the Kansas City Classic as they took down William Jewell 3-0 on Friday night.

In the first set, Emporia State took an early 5-2 lead, highlighted by a pair of Sandora Sasaki kills. The Cardinals fired back with a 7-2 run of their own as they took a 9-7 lead over the Hornets. For much of the set, the Hornets and Cardinals went back and forth, as the set was eventually tied 22-22. A kill from Orianna Clements followed by a ball handling error set the Hornets up to take the first set. Ainslee Stepp delivered one of her two service aces in the match to capture the first set 25-22 for Emporia State.

Similar to set one, the Hornets took an early 5-2 lead over the Cardinals. William Jewell worked their way back once again as the Emporia State lead was trimmed to 9-8. The Hornets were able to rebuild their lead and keep the Cardinals at a distance for the remainder of the set as they took set two 25-19 to build their 2-0 lead in the match.

Emporia State fell behind early in set three as William Jewell built a 9-5 lead over the Hornets. The Hornets found their way back as they claimed a 13-12 lead halfway through the set. The Hornets built upon their lead on their way to a 25-18 win in set three to clinch the 3-0 win over William Jewell.

Winny Harris and Sandora Sasaki both recorded double-digit kills with 11 and 10 respectively, while Shelby Ebert tallied eight kills of her own. Brailee Bogle tallied 27 assists for the Hornets while Anakaren Chavez led the way with 13 digs.

Emporia State returns to action on Saturday, September 2 as they take on Kentucky Wesleyan. The match is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
