April 7, 2023 – Emporia State put together a five-run first inning before the bats fell silent as Newman rallied back to take game two of the series with a 13-5 win over the Hornets.
The Hornets jumped out to a quick start in the first with a leadoff single from
Chandler Bloomer followed by an error and another single from
Kadyn Williams to load the bases for
TJ Racherbaumer. Racherbaumer answered the call with a two RBI single to give Emporia State a 2-0 lead over the Jets.
With Williams on third and Racherbaumer on second, a passed ball brought in Williams to extend the Emporia State lead to 3-0.
Patryk Hernandez grounded out to score Racherbaumer and give the Hornets a 4-0. Following the Hernandez RBI groundout,
Palmer Hutchison capped off the inning with a solo home run as Emporia took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the first inning.
Newman was retired in order by Hornet starting pitcher
Noah Geekie and the Jets were held without a base runner until their first hit in the bottom of the third inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, Newman was able to load the bases with one out before Geekie recorded two consecutive outs to keep the Jets off the scoreboard and maintain the 5-0 lead for Emporia State.
Emporia State was retired in order before Newman was able to tally their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. A leadoff triple from Jason Schneider followed by an RBI groundout got the Jets on the board as the Hornets held a 5-1 lead through four innings.
The bats for the Hornets continued to be held in check following the five-run first as Emporia State was retired in order in the fifth before the Jets trimmed the deficit in half with a two-run home run from Jenner Steele as Emporia State held a 5-3 lead into the sixth inning.
In the sixth, Emporia State drew a pair of walks but were again held scoreless. Newman responded with five runs on three hits, three walks and a Hornet error to take an 8-5 lead over the Hornets.
The Hornets managed just one hit over the final three frames while Newman added one run in the seventh and four runs in the eighth as Emporia State fell in game two of the series 13-5 against the Jets from McCarthy Field.
Emporia State tallied just seven hits as
Chandler Bloomer and
TJ Racherbaumer both went 2-4 and scored a run while Racherbaumer recorded two RBI.
Palmer Hutchison went 1-3 with a solo home run.
The Hornets will conclude the series on Saturday, April 8. The series finale is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. from McCarthy Field in Wichita, Kan.
