Hornet Tennis edged by Newman

Emporia State men fall 4-3, women 5-2 to Jets

April 6, 2023-Both the Emporia State men and women were edged by Newman with the men falling 4-3 and the women 5-2 on Thursday at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex.

The women dropped all three doubles matches and Karen Santiago withdrew due to an injury at #1 singles to put the Hornets in a 2-0 deficit.  Angelina Gnezdilova cut the lead in half with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #3 singles and Paige Stranghoner evened things for Emporia State with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #5 singles.  Newman picked up a win at #4 singles and then Ani Zeikeidze pulled out a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win over Alexia Desmet at #2 in a match that lasted nearly two and a half hours to clinch the dual win.  .

The men's dual came down to the final match before the Jets pulled it out 4-3. Theo Belmonte and Harrison Brown won 6-3 at #2 doubles while Gwendal Mazuay and Jaden Tredway prevailed 6-3 at #3 to give the Hornets the first point.  Dominik Simunovic made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 7-6 win ar #1 singles before the Jets answered with three set wins at #2 and #3 to even the dual. A win at #4 that went to a tiebreaker in the second set gave Newman a 3-2 lead.  Mazuay evened the dual at 3-3 with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 win at #5 making the #6 singles the deciding match.  Sergio Vera lost the first set 6-2 and took the second set to a tiebreaker before falling 7-0 as Newman won the dual.

The next action for Emporia State will be on Monday, April 10 when the men play host to Southeastern Oklahoma. First serve from the Kossover Family Tennis Complex is set for 12:00 p.m. Both the men and women will then head to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst on Tuesday, April 11. First serve from the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo. is set for 1:00 p.m.
