LAST SETS
Emporia State went on the road to nationally ranked Northwest Missouri and came away with a pair of losses before lightning in the area ended the matches. The Hornet men lost to the #12 Bearcats 4-0 while the Emporia State women fell 5-0 to #14 Northwest Missouri.
The Bearcats won the double point with wins at #1 and #2 but
Caroline Henry and
Andrea Santiago gave the Hornets a 7-5 win at #3 while
Angelina Gnezdilova and
Anastasia Pesic battled to a 6-4 loss at the #1 slot.
For the Hornet men
Theo Belmonte and
Harrison Brown had the tight match in doubles, falling 7-5 at #2.Â
Jordi Bou Sastre only lost to #41 Michael Delebois 6-4, 7-5 at the #1 singles spot.
THE COACH
Former Hornet CeCe Peyroche is the interim coach for Emporia State following the retirement of coach Les Stafford in December. She is 5-7 with the men's team and 4-10 in women's action. Peyroche was 23-15 in singles play during her three years as a Hornet before moving into the graduate assistant position last year. Â
A LOOK AT THE HORNETS
The Hornet women are 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the MIAA this year. They have had success near the top of the order in singles, going a combined 13-14 at the #2 and #3 singles positions.
Alexia Desmet is 4-7 overall with a 2-6 mark at #1 and a 2-1 record in the #2 position.Â
Karen Santiago is 6-7 overall with a 3-2 mark at #2 singles and a 3-4 record at the #3 spot.
Angelina Gnezdilova is 5-8 with a 3-3 mark at #1 and 1-1 record at #3 singles.Â
Paige Stranghoner has gone 5-6 overall playing at #3, #4, and #5.
Emporia State is 6-7 at the #1 spot in doubles play. The Hornets have used a total of nine different doubles teams this year.
Karen Santiago has gone 3-1 at #1 playing with Desmet, Stranghoner and
Andrea Santiago.
The Emporia State men are 5-7 overall with a 1-2 mark in MIAA/GAC North Division play.
Harrison Brown in 5-4 on the year, going 1-1 at #3, 2-2 at #4 and 2-1 at #5 singles.Â
Dominik Simunovic has played the top spot in ten duals with a 3-7 record on the year.
Theo Belmonte is 4-7 on the year with a 3-5 mark at the #3 position.
The Hornets are 8-15 in #2 and #3 doubles but have gone just 1-11 at the #1 doubles spot on the season. Simunovic and Brown have combined to go 4-3 this year as a doubles team with a 3-3 mark at #2 and 1-0 record at #3 doubles.
KNOW THE FOE
The Newman women are 8-6, 1-3 in the MIAA. They have lost three of their last four duals with a win over Fort Hays State.
The Jet men are 9-8 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA. They have a win over Augustan in their last four duals.
NEXT SERVE
The men are scheduled to play Southeastern Oklahoma on Monday, April 10 at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, April 11 when they travel to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst in non-conference action. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Plaza Tennis Center.
