Emporia State records ten hits; unable to stifle Rogers State in 12-3 loss

April 2, 2023 – Emporia State fell to Rogers State 12-3 on Sunday afternoon despite ten hits for the Hornets.

For the third consecutive game, Rogers State built an early lead behind multiple runs in the first inning. The Hillcats drew a leadoff walk before Prescott Horn hit a two-run home run to put Rogers State ahead 2-0.

In the bottom half of the inning, Emporia State responded with one run of their own. Chandler Bloomer drew a one-out walk that was followed by a single from Palmer Hutchison.

The Hornets would score on a failed pickoff attempt to second base as Hutchison advanced to second and Bloomer came home to score to make the score 2-1.

The Hillcats answered back with four more runs in the second inning as they tallied four hits, including a trio of RBI singles to build a 6-1 lead over Emporia State.

Following a scoreless bottom half for the Hornets, both teams were held without a run in the third inning as Brayden Tower retired the Hillcats with a strikeout.

Rogers State expanded their lead in the fourth inning with an RBI ground-rule double from Joel Escalante followed the second home run of the game by Prescott Horn to put the Hillcats ahead 9-1.

Noah Geekie started the bottom half with a leadoff home run for the second run of the game for the Hornets. Mason Sturdy followed the home run with a single up the middle before Patryk Hernandez lined into a double play to half the Hornet momentum.

In the fifth, a solo home run from Gavin Mestas extended the Hillcat lead to 10-2.

Emporia State scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. TJ Racherbaumer led off the inning with a double to left field. Two batters later, Mason Sturdy singled to drive in Racherbaumer.

Rogers State tallied two more runs in the top of the seventh inning before both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the game.

The Hornets tallied ten hits as Chandler Bloomer, Noah Geekie and Mason Sturdy each recorded two of their own.
