Emporia State men's tennis ends season with win over William Jewell

Hornets post 4-3 come from behind win over the Cardinals

April 16, 2023-Emporia State won the final three singles matches to end the season with a 4-3 win over William Jewell on Senior Day Sunday at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex.
 
The Cardinals opened the dual with a 6-2 win at #1 doubles before Jordi Bou Sastre and Pablo Carranza took a 7-6 (7-4) in at #2 doubles.  Jewell earned the doubles point and a 1-0 lead with a 7-5 win at #3.
 
Bou Sastre was forced to withdraw with an injury leading 5-3 in the first set at #1 singles as William Jewell took a 2-0 lead.  Playing in his final match as a Hornet, Theo Belmonte got Emporia State on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 win at #2 singles.
 
A Cardinal win at #3 gave them a 3-1 lead heading into the final three singles matches.
 
Gwendal Mazuay started the Emporia State comeback with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #4 singles before Sergio Vera evened the dual at 3-3 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #5 singles.
 
With all of the other action over the Hornets Lleyton Fosha and the Cardinals Cory Conley met to decid the match on the Les Stafford Championship Court.  Fosha won the first set 6-4 before Conley came back with a 7-5 win in the second to force a third set tiebreaker.
 
Fosha won the first two points only to see Conley tie it at 2-2. Fosha then reeled off three straight points to take a 5-2 lead. The Hornet's lead was still three points before Conley scored two straight to pull within 7-6.   Fosha answered with two of his own before Conley scored to make it 9-7. Fosha won when Conley's forehand went wide to give the Hornets the win.
 
Emporia State would go 5-2 at the Kossover Family Tennis Center this year and finished the season with a 6-9 record overall.
