TURNPIKE TUSSLE
Emporia State travels up the Kansas Turnpike to take on nationally ranked Washburn.  First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
 
LAST SETS
The Emporia State women picked up their first MIAA win of the season on Sunday with a 7-0 victory over Fort Hays State at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex.
The top of the order got the Hornets moving to start the dual.  Anelina Gnezdilova and Anastasia Pesic won 6-3 at #1 double while Alexia Desmet and Karen Santiago won 6-3 at #2 to give Emporia State the doubles point.
Emporia State did not drop a set during singles play.  Gnezdilova was leading 6-2, 4-1 when the Tigers Stefany Stemmer withdrew due to injury at #1 singles.  Desmet picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at #2, Karen Santiago won 6-2, 6-2 at #3 while Paige Stranghoner won 6-1, 6-2 at #4 singles.  Pesic won 6-0, 6-3 at the #5 position and Andrea Santiago finished the sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at #6 singles.
The Emporia State opened MIAA/GAC North Division play with a 6-1 win over Augustana on March 18 at the Kossover Complex.
Augustana won at 6-4 at #1 doubles but Theo Belmonte and Harrison Brown evened the double competition with a 6-2 win at #2. Gwendal Mazuay and Jaden Tredway won 6-2 at #3 to to give the Hornets an early 1-0 lead.
Henry Dombusch evened things for Augie with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at #1 singles over Dominik Simunovic. Jordi Bou Sastre quickly gave the lead back to the Hornets with a 6-3, 6-0 win at #2 singles.  Theo Belmonte gave ESU a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win at #3 singles.  Harrison Brown would clinch the win for Emporia State with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 victory at #4 singles. The Hornets closed out the dual with Jaden Tredway winning 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) at #5 and Gwendal Mazuay picking up a 6-2, 6-3 win at #6 singles.

THE COACH
Former Hornet CeCe Peyroche is the interim coach for Emporia State following the retirement of coach Les Stafford in December. She is 5-5 with the men's team and 3-8 in women's action. Peyroche was 23-15 in singles play during her three years as a Hornet before moving into the graduate assistant position last year.  

A LOOK AT THE HORNETS
The Hornet women are 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA this year. They have had some success at the top of the order in singles, going a combined 16-16 in the top three singles positions. Alexia Desmet is 4-4 overall with a 2-3 mark at #1 and a 2-1 record in the #2 position.  Karen Santiago is 5-5 overall with a 2-1 mark at #2 singles and a 3-3 record at the #3 spot.  Paige Stranghoner has gone 5-5 overall playing at #3, #4, and #5.
Emporia State is also 5-5 at the #1 spot in doubles play. The Hornets have used a total of nine different doubles teams this year. Karen Santiago has gone 2-1 at #1 playing with Desmet and Stranghoner.
The Emporia State men are 5-5 overall with a 1-0 mark in MIAA/GAC North Division play. The men have had success down the lineup in singles with an 18-18 combined mark in #3-6 singles. Harrison Brown in 5-3 on the year, going 1-0 at #3, 2-2 at #4 and 2-1 at #5 singles.  Dominik Simunovic has played the top spot in nine of ten duals with a 3-6 record on the year.
The Hornets are 8-11 in #2 and #3 doubles but have gone just 1-9 at the #1 doubles spot on the season. Simunovic and Brown have combined to go 4-3 this year as a doubles team with a 3-3 mark at #2 and 1-0 record at #3 doubles.

KNOW THE FOE
The Washburn women are 8-5, 2-1 in the MIAA and ranked #19 in the nation. Sofia Smagina is the top ranked Division II singles player in the nation. She is also nationally ranked with two different partners in doubles play.
The Washburn men are 9-5, 1-1 in the MIAA and ranked #38 in the nation. Tim Hammes is ranked #55 in the nation in singles play. A combination of four players have three doubles teams ranked in the top 36 nationally.

NEXT SERVE
The Emporia State women have rescheduled their match with McPherson to this Friday, March 31 at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
Both teams travel to Maryville on Tuesday, April 4 to play Northwest Missouri. First serve from the Grube Courts at the Rosewell Tennis Center is set for 2:00 p.m.
