HOME AND AWAY
The Emporia State men's and women's tennis teams return to action against Metropolitan State – Denver at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex.
LAST SETS
Emporia State traveled to Hillsboro, Kan. on February 17 and took care of business with a 7-0 win over a short handed Tabor College team.
The Bluejays only had five players available so the Hornets started with a 1-0 lead before a ball was served. It quickly became 2-0 as Emporia State swept both doubles matches played 6-0 with
Karen Santiago and
Paige Stranghoner winning at #1 and
Andrea Santiago and
Caroline Henry winning at #2.
Stranghoner was leading 6-0, 1-0 at #3 singles when her opponent retired to give ESU a 3-0 lead.
Angelina Gnezdilova at #1,
Karen Santiago at #2, Andra Santiago at #4 and
Sheriden Wichman at #5 all won 6-0,6-0 as the Hornets evened their season record at 2-2.
The Emporia State men rolled to a 6-1 victory over Tabor on February 18 at the Kossover Family Tennis Center.
Tabor won at #1 doubles with Mateo Garcia taking a 6-1 win over
Theo Belmonte and Sergio Garza, but the #2 and #3 teams responded with wins to give the Hornets the double point.
Harrison Brown and
Dominik Simunovic won 6-4 at #2 while th #3 team of
Pablo Carranza and Gwendal Mazquay won 6-3 to send Emporia State to single splay with momentum.
Simunovik got things started with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win at #1 singles. Belmonte won 6-1, 6-4 at #2 and Brown picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at #3 to clinch the match for the Hornets. Carranza won 7-6, 6-2 at #% and
Lleyton Fosha picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at #6 to round out the Hornet scoring.
THE COACH
Former Hornet CeCe Peyroche is currently guiding the Hornets following the retirement of coach Les Stafford in December. She is 2-2 in both men's and women's action. Peyroche was 23-15 in singles play during her three years as a Hornet before moving into the graduate assistant position last year.
A LOOK AT THE HORNETS
The 2023 MIAA Women's and MIAA/GAC Men's Tennis Preseason Polls have been announced and the Hornet men are picked to finish fourth in the North Division while the Hornet are picked eighth overall.
The Hornet men are 2-2 on the season.
Sergio Vera is 2-1 on the season in singles play with a win at #3 and 1-1 record at #4 singles.
Harrison Brown is 2-1 with wins at #3 and #4 singles and a loss at the #5 position. The doubles team of
Harrison Brown and
Dominik Simunovic is 3-1 on the season with a 2-1 record at #2 and a win at #3.
The Hornet women are 2-2 this year.
Paige Stranghoner is 3-1 with a 2-0 record at #5 singles and a 1-1 mark at #3.
Alexia Desmet and Angelina Gnexdilova are 2-1 at the #1 doubles position.
KNOW THE FOE
The MSU-Denver women are 4-3 with a 1-3 record in the spring.
The Roadrunner men are 4-2 on the year and have gone 2-1 this semester.
