March 13, 2023 – Emporia State baseball fell to Pittsburg State 9-8 in a back-and-forth MIAA midweek matchup from Pittsburg, Kan. on Tuesday evening.
The Hornets jumped ahead of the Gorillas early in the first inning with back-to-back hits to lead off the game.
Kadyn Williams doubled to left center and was followed up by an RBI single from
Chandler Bloomer as Emporia State took a 1-0 lead.
Following a scoreless second inning from both teams, Emporia State doubled their advantage with a two-out RBI single from
Noah Geekie in the third inning.
Pittsburg State scored three runs in the bottom half of the third as they took their first lead of the game 3-2 over the Hornets.
In the fourth inning, Emporia State added a third run to tie the game as
Brooks Whaley recorded an RBI infield single to tie the game 3-3 before the Gorillas regained the lead in the bottom half with a run of their own.
With two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, Pittsburg State took a 6-3 lead over the Hornets before Emporia State rallied in the sixth inning to tie the game.
Brooks Whaley started the sixth inning with a leadoff walk and stole second with
Kadyn Williams at the plate. Williams singled up the middle to score Whaley and make the score 6-4. Williams advanced to second on a wild pitch and then stole third base before scoring on a
Palmer Hutchison RBI single to cut the deficit in half.
Noah Geekie capped the inning with his second RBI of the game to tie the game 6-6.
The Hornets held the Gorillas scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning before regaining the lead in the seventh inning. Emporia State added two more runs with a
Kadyn Williams RBI single and a throwing error by Pittsburg State to take an 8-6 lead.
Pittsburg State would rally to score three runs over the next two innings as the Hornets trailed 9-8 entering the ninth inning. The Hornets were able to get two runners on base in the final frame but were unable to tie the game as Emporia State fell 9-8 against Pittsburg State.
Kadyn Williams went 3-5 with a walk, two RBI and four runs scored while
Palmer Hutchison,
Noah Geekie and
Quinton Carlberg each recorded two hits of their own.
Emporia State will return to action against Northwest Missouri as they travel to Maryville, Mo. for a weekend series from March 17-19. First pitch on Friday, March 17 is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
