March 10, 2023 – Emporia State dropped a pair of games on Friday afternoon against #6 Central Oklahoma as they fell 5-1 in game one and 7-2 in game two.
Game One
Both teams were held in check through the first three innings before the Bronchos scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning.
The Hornets were unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning and in the top of the fifth inning, Central Oklahoma added three more runs to take a 4-0 lead over Emporia State.
Emporia State recorded their first hit of the game in the fifth inning as
Alexis Dial singled up the middle, but the Hornets were unable to score.
Following the fifth and final run for the Bronchos in the top of the seventh inning, Emporia State applied the pressure in the bottom half.
Ari Cordova started the inning with a one-out walk and was followed by back-to-back singles from
Haley Garnett and
Roni Raines with Raines driving in Cordova to trim the Bronchos lead to 5-1. Following the Raines RBI single, Dial singled to load the bases but the Hornets were unable to trim the gap as they fell to the #6 Bronchos 5-1.
Alexis Dial went 2-3 while
Haley Garnett and
Roni Raines each recorded one of their own.
Game Two
The Hornets struck first in the bottom of the first inning as back-to-back RBI singles from
Roni Raines and
Haley Garnett gave Emporia State a 2-0 lead over Central Oklahoma.
Central Oklahoma chipped away at the lead as they scored one run in the third inning and eventually took the lead over the Hornets with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning as Emporia State trailed 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Bronchos rallied for four runs to extend their advantage over the Hornets to 7-2.
Emporia State attempted to rally in their last at-bat as
Emma Furnish and
Abbey Ward reached base with two outs but the Hornets were unable to score as they fell in game two 7-2 against Central Oklahoma.
Abbey Ward went 2-4 in game two with a run scored while
Emma Furnish,
Roni Raines and
Haley Garnett each recorded one of their own.
Emporia State has rescheduled their doubleheader against Newman for Tuesday, April 18 and will return to action on Tuesday, March 14 as they travel to the Hawaiian Islands
for a doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific.
