February 26, 2023 – Emporia State took home two wins on Sunday afternoon at the Washburn Classic with an 8-4 comeback win over Wayne State before completing the Sunday sweep with a 5-1 win over Missouri-St. Louis.
Game One
Emporia State opened the scoring in game one on Sunday as
McKensy Glass singled to score
Haley Garnett and put the Hornets ahead 1-0.
Following a scoreless third inning from both the Hornets and the Wildcats, Wayne State tallied four runs with a pair in both the fourth and fifth inning as Emporia State trailed 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Emporia State rallied to score seven runs to take an 8-4 lead over Wayne State.
Emporia State loaded the bases to open the inning before a wild pitch trimmed the deficit to 4-2. Following a pair of outs, a defensive error cut the deficit in half as Emporia State trailed 4-3.
Emma Furnish gave the Hornets the lead with a two-out, two RBI double as the Hornets took a 5-4 advantage over Wayne State. The seven-run inning was capped off by a three-run home run by
Roni Raines as Emporia State established their 8-4 lead.
The Hornets were able to keep the Wildcats scoreless in the seventh as they clinched an 8-4 win over Wayne State.
Emma Furnish went 3-4 in game one with two RBI and a run scored.
Roni Raines hit a home run and tallied three RBI.
Game Two
Following a scoreless first inning from both Emporia State and Missouri-St. Louis in game two,
Jayda VanAckeren and
Gracie Rabe both recorded an RBI in the second inning as the Hornets took a 2-0 lead over the Tritons.
The Hornets would strike again in the fourth inning as they extended their lead to 5-0. With two outs and the bases loaded,
Haley Garnett doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and drive in three runs.
Gracie Rabe continued to stifle the Tritons in the circle as Missouri-St. Louis managed just one run in the sixth as Emporia State held on to a 5-1 win in game two.
Gracie Rabe pitched a complete game, allowing just one run with three strikeouts and just one walk allowed, to pick up her third win of the season.
Roni Raines went 2-3 with a walk and a run scored while
Haley Garnett went 1-4 with three RBI.
Emporia State will return home on Monday, February 27 as they take on St. Cloud State in a doubleheader from Turnbull Field. Game one is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
