Sunday Sweep for Emporia State Softball in Lubbock

Hornets win 8-2 and 9-1 over Adams State

February 12, 2023 – Emporia State capped off the Lubbock College Sports Invitational with a pair of wins over Adams State on Sunday. The Hornets defeated the Grizzlies 8-2 in game one before ending the weekend with a 9-1 run-rule victory in game two. With the wins the Hornets finished the opening weekend 5-1.

Game One
The Grizzlies opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning before the Hornets knotted the score at 1-1 with single from Haley Garnett in the bottom of the second inning.
Emporia State took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by home runs from Emma Furnish and Alexis Dial.
The Hornets added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as a pair of errors by the Grizzlies allowed Furnish and Abbey Ward to score for Emporia State.
Both teams scored a lone run in the sixth inning before the Hornets kept the Grizzlies scoreless in the top of the seventh inning to complete the 8-2 win in game one of the double header.
Seven different Hornets recorded a hit in game one with Emma Furnish leading the way as she went three for three with a pair of runs scored.
Jayda VanAckeren earned her first win of the season as she went 5.0 innings allowing four hits, one unearned run and striking out three batters.

Game Two
Emporia State used their speed in game two, stealing six bases with two triples in a 9-1 six inning win in the night cap.
Abbey Ward got the Hornets on the board in the top of the first with a lead off double, steal of third and then came home on a ground out by Lexi Williams.
The Grizzlies answered with one in the bottom of the first but Emporia State responded with four runs in the top of the second. Emma Furnish had an RBI triple and would steal home to highlight the inning.
That was more than enough for Sydney Righi in the circle.  After giving up the run in the first she would toss 5.2 scoreless innings with just three hits.
Emporia State was able to invoke the run rule with four runs in the top of the sixth. Ari Cordova had a two run triple in the inning.
Five Hornets had wo hits with Abbey Ward going two for three with three runs scored and an RBI.
 
Emporia State is scheduled to be back in action this weekend with the ESU Classic at the Trusler Sports Complex, weather permitting.
