Emporia State Falls Against Washburn in Central Region Championship

Hornets fall 2-1 against Ichabods; finish season 14-6-4

December 1, 2023 – Emporia State Soccer fell to Washburn 2-1 on Friday afternoon in the Central Region Championship match from Ashland, Ohio.

In the first minutes of the match, both the Hornets and Ichabods took time to settle into the match as the first shot of the match came from Emporia State just four minutes into the match, forcing a save from the Washburn goalkeeper.
 
The first half continued with very few opportunities from either side before Washburn broke through in the 37th minute. Following a throw-in, Washburn controlled the ball in the box and scored with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half as the Hornets trailed 1-0.
 
Despite a 5-3 shot advantage over Washburn, Emporia State entered the halftime break trailing 1-0.
 
Following the break, Washburn generated a pair of shots within the first two minutes of the half, forcing two saves from Mackenzi Goen.
 
The equalizer for Emporia State came in the 65th minute as Mackenzie Dimarco scored for the Hornets.
 
Emporia State won a free kick on the Washburn side of midfield and after an initial header away from goal by the Ichabods, the ball was settled by Dimarco who ripped a right-footed shot in the bottom right corner and knotting the score at 1-1.
 
The second goal for Washburn would come in the 82nd minute on a penalty kick. A handball violation by the Hornets gave the Ichabods a penalty that they were able to convert, taking a 2-1 lead over Emporia State with just over eight minutes remaining.
 
Emporia State was able to get a final corner kick in the last 30 seconds but were unable to find a second goal as the Hornets fell 2-1 against Washburn.
 
Mackenzie Dimarco scored her 23rd goal of the season, matching her career-high that was set during the 2022 season. Dimarco reached 50 points for the season, setting a new career high.
