On to the MIAA Championship Match for Emporia State after a 3-2 win over Washburn

Hornets advance to third straight conference title match

November 9, 2023-Emporia State jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on to advance to the MIAA Tournament Championship match with a 3-2 win over Washburn on Thursday night at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita.

The Hornets got on the board early when Mackenzie Dimarco gave Hadlie Lowe an assist on the first goal in the 11th minute.  Dimarco pulled the keeper out on the left side of the goal and found a streaking Lowe on a cross for a 1-0 lead. Washburn controlled much of the first half as they had a 6-0 advantage on corner kick through the first 44 minutes. Emporia State got their first corner with just under 30 seconds left in the half and Abby Bachman placed it in front of the goal and Paige Putter headed it in for a 2-0 lead as the teams headed to halftime.  Just over a minute of game time elapsed before the next goal for the Hornets as Hannah Woolery used her head right in front of the goal off a corner kick from Joanie Westcoat 45 seconds into the second half for a 3-0 Emporia State lead.

Washburn finally got in the scoring column in the 80th minute when Jadyn Allen scored on an assist from Aubrey Tanksley on their 11th corner of the match.  The Ichabods made it interesting three minutes later when Ana Muruzabal scored on a scrum in front of the Hornet goal to make it 3-2. Washburn had one last chance to tie but Lakin Rold's free kick from about 30 yards out hit the crossbar.

With the win Emporia State advances to the MIAA Championship match for the third straight season and solidified their position in the NCAA Central Regional Rankings. Central Missouri will again be their opponent as the Hornets and Jennies have split the last two MIAA Championship matches.  Kick-off is set for 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kan.
