Turnpike Tussle Win Over #6 Washburn Caps Off Regular Season For Emporia State Soccer

Cole scores 17th minute winner; Hornets take down Ichabods 1-0 on Sunday afternoon

October 29, 2023 – Emporia State capped off the regular season with a 1-0 win over #6 Washburn on Sunday afternoon.

The match between the Hornets and Ichabods began slowly with just one shot from one each team in the first ten minutes.

Emporia State found the breakthrough just over 16 minutes into the match on a goal from Alexis Cole.

Following a throw-in for the Hornets in the Washburn half of the field, the ball eventually fell to Mackenzie Dimarco near the top of the box. Dimarco came under pressure and laid the ball off for Alexis Cole who took a left-footed shot that found the back of the net after glancing in off the left post.

Nearly five minutes later, Emporia State took a man advantage following a red card that was shown to Washburn in the 22nd minute.

Despite the man advantage, Emporia State managed just one shot for the remainder of the half and took their 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Hornets outshot the Ichabods 3-2 in the first half.

In the second half, Emporia State shifted directions and was able to use the wind at their back. The Hornets were able to use this, along with their man advantage, were able to outshoot the Ichabods 7-2 in the second half.

Both shots for Washburn were on target but saved by Mackenzi Goen as the Hornets held the shutout and clinched the 1-0 win over the Ichabods.

Alexis Cole scored her second goal of the season, which is also her second game-winning goal, and Mackenzie Dimarco recorded her third assist of the season. Dimarco extended her season point total to 35, which leads the MIAA.

Emporia State will host the MIAA Tournament Opening Round on Friday, November 3 from the ESU Pitch. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 2:00 p.m.
