January 25, 2023 – Emporia State limited Northeastern State to just 21 second half points as they pulled away for a 72-53 win over the Riverhawks on Wednesday evening from White Auditorium.
In the early stages of the first quarter, Northeastern State jumped in front of the Lady Hornets 7-4 through the first three minutes. Emporia State gained their footing following the early spurt from the Riverhawks as they responded with an 11-0 scoring run which was highlighted by five Victoria Price points.
The Riverhawks finally ended the Lady Hornets' scoring run with a three at the 3:44 mark of the first quarter. Over the final three and a half minutes of the first period, Emporia State outscored Northeastern State 7-3 as they took a ten-point lead, 23-13 into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw the Emporia State offense struggle as they managed to shoot just 4-14 in the second period. Northeastern State flipped their script from the first quarter as they shot 8-12 from the floor as they trimmed the Lady Hornet lead to as little as three points with 51 seconds remaining in the first half.
Emporia State weathered the offensive storm throughout the second quarter from the Riverhawks as they countered with a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line as they took a seven-point, 39-32 lead, into the halftime break.
At the half, Faith Paramore led all scorers with 16 points and was joined in double figures with Tre'Zure Jobe who added 10 points of her own. Victoria Price and Ehlaina Hartman each scored 5 points in the first half while Maary Lakes and Macy Smith each found their way onto the scoresheet with 2 points and 1 point respectively.
Following the halftime break, Emporia State hit the ground running as they opened the second half on an 8-0 scoring run that lasted until the 6:03 mark of the third quarter. Northeastern State responded to the scoring run with a 10-2 run of their own that lasted just over three minutes.
The Riverhawk run cut the Lady Hornet lead down to seven points as Emporia State held a 49-42 lead over Northeastern State. The Lady Hornets generated their second scoring run of the third quarter as they ended the period with an 8-2 run which expanded their lead to 13 points as they led 57-44 entering the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Emporia State retained their momentum from the third quarter as they built on their advantage by scoring the first 11 points over the first three and a half minutes of the fourth quarter as they built a 68-44 lead over the Riverhawks, their largest of the game.
Across both quarters, the Lady Hornet scoring run totaled 21-2 and lasted 6:26 of game time until the 6:29 mark of the fourth quarter.
Over the remainder of the game, Emporia State maintained a 20-point advantage over Northeastern State until the closing seconds as they completed a season sweep over the Riverhawks with a 72-53 victory.
Tre'Zure Jobe and Faith Paramore led the Lady Hornets as they both totaled 22 points in the game. Jobe and Paramore were joined in double figures by Victoria Price who tallied 14 points of her own.
As a team, Emporia State outrebounded Northeastern State 36-32 and forced 20 Riverhawk turnovers. The Lady Hornets shot 27-63, 42.9% from the floor and 16-20 from the free-throw line.
The Lady Hornets will return to action on Sunday, January 29 from White Auditorium as they will take on Rogers State. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 1:30 p.m.
