STARTING OFF
Emporia State will open the season in St. Louis at the UMSL Tournament. The Hornets will take on the host Tritons before playing two first-time opponents, Saint Leo and Southern Arkansas. The Hornets will finish the tournament against Missouri S&T who the Hornets defeated in their only previous matchup in 2007.
THE COACHES
Bing Xu is in his 17th season as head coach for Emporia State and is the fourth winningest coach in MIAA volleyball history. He holds a record of 293-213 and has led the Hornets to five NCAA Tournament appearances and one MIAA Championship.
Ryan Young is 230-131 entering his 13th season at Missouri-St. Louis.
Natalie Koryzna is 12-19 entering her second season at Saint Leo.
Alli O'Banion is in her first season as head coach at Southern Arkansas.
Andy Halaz is 55-36 entering his fifth season as head coach at Missouri S&T.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State returns all five hitters that reached 100 kills last season along with both setters -
Riley Bernskoetter and
Ainslee Stepp. Red-shirt senior
Orianna Clements returns after leading the team with 189 kills last season and earning MIAA Honorable Mention honors. Bernskoetter recorded 557 assists which ranked eighth in the MIAA.
Shelby Ebert was second on the team in both kills and digs last season. The Hornets return eight players that started at least ten matches a year and will be joined by four transfers and four freshmen on this year's team
SCOUTING MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS
The Tritons were 25-9 last season and 15-3 with a second place finish in the GLVC. The Tritons are receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Preseason Poll.

Emporia State leads the all time series 10-8.

The Hornets fell in five sets to the Tritons at the Washburn Tournament in 2017.

Emporia State travels to the Sooner State for the UCO-OC Tournament. The games will take place Sep. 2-3.
EMPORIA STATE EXPERIENCE
Emporia State returns a significant amount of their offensive production from last season and will look to use this to their advantage. At the forefront of the attack for the Hornets will be
Orianna Clements and
Shelby Ebert. Clements led the way with 189 kills and averaged just over two kills per set. Ebert was not far behind with 187 kills on the season and an average of 1.99 kills per set last season. In addition to her ability on the outside, Ebert also had the most digs of any returning member of the Hornets with 253 last season for an average of 2.69 per set. Emporia State also returns
Leah Mach,
Megan Stretton, and
Dorianne Lebron who all recorded over 100 kills last season. The Hornets will also return
Riley Bernskoetter and
Ainslee Stepp, who recorded 557 and 259 assists from the setter position last season.
HORNET NEWCOMERS
In addition to the production that returns for the Hornets, Emporia State also welcomes eight newcomers to the roster, with four transfers and four freshman. The Hornets added outside hitters,
Macy Shreffler,
Rylee Peak, and
Zuzanna Buchnajzer. Middle hitters McKenya Sorrels and
Caydence Doebele will look to strengthen the middle attack for the Hornets. Emporia State also added right side
Madisyn Pitts and setter
Grace Xu.
IN THE CLASSROOM
Last year, and for the 11th straight year, the Hornet Volleyball team earned the USMC/AVCA Academic Honor which honors schools with that maintain a team GPA above 3.30. In addition to this honor, five returning members were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll last year while eight of the nine returning players were named to the 2021 Emporia State AD Honor Roll.
MIAA MAGNITUDE
The MIAA begins the 2022 season with four members ranked in the top twelve in the AVCA Division II Preseason Coaches Poll. Four members in the preseason top 25 ranks second behind the NSIC. The three MIAA members in the top-10 is more than any other conference.
