HORNET OFFENSE STAYS HOT IN SECOND STRAIGHT RUN RULE WIN

Emporia State defeats Newman 16-6 in seven innings; Six Hornets record multi-hit game

April 10, 2022 – Emporia State replicated their performance from Saturday with a 16-6 run-rule win over Newman in seven innings on Sunday afternoon from Glennen Field.

Noah Geekie kick started the game for Emporia State, getting the start on the mound. Working around a double in the first, Geekie struck out the side and gave way to the Hornet lineup.

Emporia State got the offense started from the first batter. Three consecutive singles by Sam Chaput, Blake Carroll and TJ Racherbaumer gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Javier Pena then laid down a sacrifice bunt that was bobbled to load the bases. After the Jets got the first out, Chandler Bloomer doubled into right center field to drive in two runs. Later in the inning, with bases loaded and two outs, Mason Sturdy started his day with an RBI infield single. Sam Chaput got his second opportunity of the first inning and came through with a two RBI double into left field as the Hornets took a 6-0 lead through one inning.

On a windy day at Glennen Field, runs were likely to be scored and this came true as Newman was able to lift a pair of home runs in the second inning in order to trim the Hornet lead down to 6-4.

The Hornets were able to keep the offensive pressure on as Chandler Bloomer got his third RBI of the day to score TJ Racherbaumer in the second inning. In the third inning, Emporia State would add two more runs. The first came with Mason Sturdy on third base and Blake Carroll at the plate. Carroll grounded to the right side and an errant throw to the plate allowed Sturdy to score and Carroll advanced to second. Javier Pena then doubled down the left field line to score Carroll as Emporia State now led 9-4 over Newman.

The offensive onslaught continued in the fourth inning with four more runs. With two runners on, Mason Sturdy drove a ball into right center that resulted in a triple and two more RBI for the freshman. Later in the inning with two outs, Carroll came up again with Sturdy on third base and this time launched a ball over the right field wall, giving the Hornets a 13-4 lead.

In the sixth, a pair of solo home runs by Newman made the score now 13-6.

Emporia State was not quite finished at the plate as the game headed to the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and the bases loaded, Dylan Werries ripped a two RBI single. Following Werries was pinch-hitter Patryk Hernandez who singled with two strikes into right field as Bloomer crossed the plate to give Emporia State the 16-6 run-rule victory.

Noah Geekie went 6.0 innings on the mound for Emporia State allowing six runs and striking out nine batters with just one walk. Kolin Demel recorded one scoreless inning in relief.

At the plate, Mason Sturdy and Chandler Bloomer highlighted the Hornet offense as they each went 3-4 with three RBI. Sam Chaput, Blake Carroll, TJ Racherbaumer and Javier Pena each recorded two hits in the game.

Emporia State will remain at home for a midweek matchup against Pittsburg State on Tuesday, April 12 from Glennen Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
