GETTING AFTER IT
Both the Emporia State men and women have a busy month of April with the men playing six duals and the women 11 over the next 22 days. The action starts on Friday as the Hornet women travel to Northeastern State, while the ESU men start their month on Sunday against Rockhurst at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex.

LAST SET
The Emporia State women opened MIAA play with a 6-1 loss to Missouri Western last Sunday at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex. The Hornets battled in all three doubles matches falling 7-5 at both #1 and #2 with a 6-4 loss at #3 as the Griffons picked up the first point.
Karen Santiago Sanchez was the only Hornet to pull out a victory. She defeated Isabella MacGibbon 6-3, 6-2 at #3 singles.
The Hornet men have not played a regular season match since falling to then #44 Midwestern State on March 14 in Wichita Falls, Texas. They did play an exhibition match against Barton CC on March 24.
THE COACH
Les Stafford is 14-16 with the women and 14-14 with the men in dual match play in his third year as the head coach at his alma mater. He is 192-159 in 18 years overall as a head women's coach. Stafford was the head coach of the women's program at Wichita State from 1990-2004 and was a four-time conference coach of the year for the Shockers. He went 178-143 in dual match play with four conference tournament championships and one regular season title. He spent 15 years as the head tennis pro at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, Kan. Stafford was a four-time NAIA National Tournament qualifier during his career with the Hornets. As a senior in 1981, he won the #1 singles and #1 doubles championship at the CSIC Tournament. Stafford ended his career by winning three doubles matches and one singles match in his final appearance at the national tournament. Â
A LOOK AT THE HORNETS
The Emporia State women are 3-5 on the season.
Micaela McSpadden has played all eighth matches at #1 singles and is 3-5 on the season.
Viktoria Mackova and
Andrea Santiago are both 4-3 on the year. Mackova is 3-2 at #6 while Santiago is 3-3 at #5 singles.
Anastasia Pesic and
Paige Stranghoner are 3-4 overall in doubles with a 3-3 mark at #2 while Mackova and
Karen Santiago Sanchez are 3-4 at #1. Â
The Emporia State men are 5-4, 1-0 in the MIAA with two of their losses to nationally ranked teams.
Harrison Brown has played eight matches at #1 singles.
Theo Belmonte is 5-3 on the year with a 3-0 mark at #4 singles.
Sergio Vera is 4-0 at #5 singles and 5-2 overall.
Jaden Tredway is 5-3 on the season with a 3-2 record at #6 singles. The Hornets have used ten different combinations in doubles with Belmonte and Vera going 5-4 overall with a 2-2 record at the #1 spot.
ABOUT THE RIVERHAWKS
Northeastern State is 4-7, 0-1 in the MIAA and are just 2-7 this spring.
SERIES HISTORY
The RiverHawks have won eight of the last nine duals with the lone Hornet win coming in 2014.
