HORNET FALL IN OVERTIME 82-81 AT ROGERS STATE

Buchanan and Turner each score 32 points

February 5, 2022-Tray Buchanan and Jumah'Ri Turner combined for 64 points but no one else scored more than four points as Emporia State fell 82-81 in overtime at Rogers State in Claremore, Okla. on Saturday.  There were 12 ties and 16 lead changes in the game with 45 fouls called.
 
Neither team took more than a four point lead to open the game until Brooks Haddock hit a three with 12:57 left to give the Hornets a 15-8 lead. The Hillcats responded with an 11-2 run to take a 19-17 lead with 5:54 left in the half.  The teams went back and forth the rest of the half with Rogers State taking at 35-34 lead into the locker room.
 
The Hillcats used a 7-0 run to take a 50-53 lead with 13:38 left and took their biggest lead of the day at 60-52 with 7:44 remaining.  They still had an eight point lead with 5:04 left when Turner scored six straight and Buchanan capped the 8-0 run with a pair of free throw to tie the score at 67 with 2:07 left.  Jordan Coblin hit two free throws with 1:46 left before Buchanan drilled a three with 43.0 seconds left to give the Hornets a 70-69 lead.  Gerren Jackson hit one of two free throws with 13.8 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

Buchanan gave Emporia State a five point lead at 77-72 with 2:33 left in the overtime. After two free throws from Jackson, Mason Thiessen got a put back to make it 79-74 with 1:41 remaining.  Ugo Obineke got loose on the baseline and dunked with 1:23 left to pull the Hillcats back within three but Buchanan answered with a top of the key jumper to make it 81-76 1:01 left.   Pullum drilled a three-pointer to make it 81-79 with 41.5 seconds left.  The Hornets worked the shot clock and Buchanan's rushed jumper went out of bounds with 12.7 seconds left.  After a timeout Coblin popped off a screen and hit a three-pointer from the left wing to give Rogers State an 82-81 lead with 3.5 seconds left.  After an Emporia State timeout Kaden Evans fired a pass to Brenden Vandyke in front court between the circles and he dished to Buchanan on the wing.  Buchanan's three at the buzzer rimmed out and Rogers State escaped with the 82-81 win.
 
Tray Buchanan and Jumah'Ri Turner each scored 32 points but Mason Thiessen was the next leading scorer with four points and a team high seven rebounds. 
 
Emporia State is back in action on Tuesday, February 8 when they play host to #4 Northwest Missouri.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at WL White Auditorium.
 
NOTES:
With his 32 points Jumah'Ri Turner now has 1,216 points to rank 15th on the Emporia State all-time scoring list.  He passed both Ryan Sprecer (1212 pts from 1985-89) and Marvin Chatman (1215 pts from 1985-87) today.
With his 32 points Tray Buchanan now has 599 points this season and needs ten more to tie Cleo Gardner (609 points in 30 games in 1976-77) for tenth on the ESU single season scoring list.
