Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Early 13-0 run sparks Emporia State basketball to 63-42 win over Truman

Hornets improve to 5-0 for first time since 2006-07 season

November 22, 2022-Emporia State used and early 13-0 run to take control as they improved to 5-0 with a 63-42 win over Truman on Tuesday in White Auditorium.

The Bulldogs, playing their third road game in five days, jumped out to a 5-1 lead less than two minutes into the game. Sam Baker hit a three pointer to stop the Truman run and ignite a 13-0 run for the Hornets. Alijah Comithier, this week's MIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week, scored the final five points of the run with a coast to coast layup followed by a three-pointer after Emporia State forced a shot clock violation.  Trey Shearer answered with a three of his own to stop the run as the Hornets led 14-8 at the first media timeout.

Out of the media timeout Emporia State went on an 11-2 run to go up 25-10 with 8:57 left in the half.  Truman then went on a 9-3 run and trailed 28-19 on a turnaround jumper in the lane by Shearer with 5:11 left in the half.  Atavian Butler hit a three with 4:42 remaining to put the Hornets up 31-19 and the lead would not get below double digits the rest of the way.

Emporia State led 36-23 at the half after limiting Truman to just .276 shooting in the first 20 minutes.   The Hornets started the second half with a 15-4 run to take their biggest lead of the night at 51-27 with 13:53 left in the game.

Alijah Comithier led Emporia State with 19 points and was joined in double figures by Atavian Butler with 16 and Sam Baker with 11 points. Kaden Evans only scored two points but had five steals, six rebounds and seven assists with no turnovers.  Xavier Hall was the only Bulldogs in double figures finishing with ten points.

Emporia State will take the rest of Thanksgiving week off and will return to action on Tuesday, November 29 when they play host to Saint Mary.  Tip-off from White Auditorium is set for 5:00 p.m. to help accommodate the annual Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade that evening.
