January 22, 2022-Jalen Lewis hit a buzzer beating three-pointer to give Washburn a 68-65 victory over Emporia State on Saturday afternoon in Topeka.
Tray Buchanan had tied the score with 12.3 seconds left as the Hornets had overcome a double digit first half deficit.
The Ichabods jumped out to a 7-3 lead to open the game but the Hornets answered with a 6-1 run to take a 9-8 lead with 13:51 left in the half.
Jumah'Ri Turner scored with 8:23 left to pull ESU within 21-19 when Washburn went on an 8-0 run to go up 29-19 with 5:01 remaining in the half. Two Cameron Deffebaugh free throws gave the Ichabods their biggest lead at 33-21 with 1:38 left in the half. Turner scored five points in the final 90 seconds to give him 16 for the half as Emporia State trailed 35-28 at the break.
Tray Buchanan scored the first nine points in an 11-4 run to open the second half for the Hornets. His three pointer with 14:52 left pulled Emporia State within 39-37 and
Mayuom Buom scored inside to tie the game at 39 with 14:20 remaining. There would be five more ties and 12 lead changes over the rest of the game, with neither team taking more than a four point lead.
Turner hit a three-pointer with 6:36 left to give Emporia State a 54-51 lead. That would be the biggest spread until the final buzzer as the teams traded scores for the next five minutes. After a
Mason Thiessen follow dunk with 2:00 left gave the Hornets a 63-62 lead, Tyler Geiman quickly answered with a jumper at the 1:47 mark to put the Ichabods up 64-63. Following a miss by ESU, Geiman was fouled and hit one of two free throws with 26.6 seconds left.
Brenden Van Dyke grabbed the rebound on the second miss and Emporia State called timeout down 65-63. The Hornets worked the ball and
Kaden Evans found Buchanan low and he scored to tie the game at 65 with 12.3 seconds left. Washburn did not call timeout and brought the ball up court. Geiman tried to drive the lane but was cut off. He passed out to Lewis who too one dribble to his left and hit the step back three-pointer at the buzzer to give Washburn the win.
Jumah'Ri Turner scored 29 points to lead all scorers and was joined in double figures by
Tray Buchanan with 18 points.
Mayuom Buom scored eight points, with six coming in the first four minutes of the game.
Emporia State will be back in action on Wednesday, January 26 when they play host to Central Oklahoma. Tip-off in White Auditorium is set for 7:30 p.m.
