EMPORIA STATE MEN GRIND OUT A 74-59 WIN AT PITTSBURG STATE

Turner and Buchanan combine for 47 points in the win

January 13, 2022-Tray Buchanan and Jumah'Ri Turner combined for 47 points in Emporia State's 74-59 victory at Pittsburg State on Thursday night.
 
The Gorillas jumped out to a 7-3 lead and led 20-15 with 5:29 left in the first half.  Turner would score 13 points during a 21-3 run to end the half.  Mayuom Buom started the run with a jumper in the paint and Buchanan ended it with a three at the buzzer as Emporia State took a 26-23 lead into the break.
 
Pitt State scored the first three points of the second half to crawl within ten points before Emporia State called a timeout with 18:07 left.  The Hornets responded with a 10-2 run to go up 46-28 with 15:46 left on an old fashioned three-point play by Brenden Van Dyke.
 
A 14-4 run brought the Gorillas to within eight points at 50-42 with 9:28 left.  After a pair of free throws from Buchanan made it 54-42, Ryan Pippins got a tip in and was fouled with 8:24 left.  His free throw made it 54-45 before the Hornets responded with a five straight points by Buchanan to take a 59-45 lead and the deficit never went below double digits the rest of the way.  The lead eventually reached 20 points with 1:22 left on a three pointer from Turner.
 
Turner finished with 24 poitns and six rebounds while Buchanan had 23 points and three assists.  They were joined in double figures by Buom with 12points.  Peyton Rogers-Schmidt had a team high eight rebounds and Mason Thiessen added seven boards as the Hornets outrebounded the Gorillas 41-32 on the night.
 
Emporia State is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Missouri Southern.  Tip-off from the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is set for 3:30 p.m.
